BLT AE Neri thet $746 MILLION NUCLEAR POWER STATION--One of the world's largest nuclear power sources, Ontario Hydro's Pickering generating station was opened officially, Friday, February 25, by Ontario Prime Minister William Davis and Hydro Chairman George Gathercole. Started in 1965, in 1973, will generate 2,160, the station when completed 000 kilowatts. The first two of-its four reactors have been producing electricity for the province since 1971. The station is on Lake Ontario, east of Toronto. Premier Davis expresses awe al nuclear accomplishment Following are some of the comments made by Ontario Premier William Davis in a speech at the opening of the Pickering - Generating Sta- tion, Friday, February 25. It is customary at cere- monies such as this to begin 'with expressions of pride at what has been accomplished ~on-this occasion. However, 1 would have to give voice to yet another emotion, and that is one of awe at what has been accomplished here. Not until today, looking around me, have I been able to grasp the immensity and complexity of what has been done here. This reac tion of mine is admittedly that of a layman, so I take comfort in the fact that my - enthusiasm is shared by a world com- munity of scientists and engineers = whose training and experience affords them a far more knowledgeable perspective, and many of - whom are here today to join in our celebrations. On behalf of the people and the Government of Ontario, I want to exténd my praise to - Ontario Hydro, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, and the many manufactur- ing firms that comprised the team - which have made nuclear power in Ontario and Canada a viable reality. All of them, beginning with AEC, committed themselves - to finding a better and unique way of doing things in terms of Canada's needs and Canada's resources. First, they absorbed the already considerable body of know- ledge available in the field of nuclear energy, and then, with the type of persistent scientific mental exploration that has always commanded a layman's stunned admira- tion, they arrived at a solution and a conclusion, and set themselves to work. To the world, the signifi- cance of Pickering and the CANDU system lies in its , ability to use natural uran- ium fuel, with: lower fueling costs than any other reactor available on 'the market today. : It will enable this plant to produce electricity at a cost competitive with. or lower than that of a comparable coal-fired station, and during one month recently this station we're officially open- ing today had a power output that exceeded any other nuclear plant in the world. And that's with two of its units still to become opera- tional! What we have done hereis-- develop our own technology, rather than importing it, and as a result we now have a - proven nuclear system tailo- red to fit Canada's particular needs and resources. This shouldn't surprise us. I would remind all of you -- Canadians, and our distin- guished guests from the United States and overseas ~ -- that our firsts over the years have included the discovery of insulin, and the invention of such things as the first television camera, the electro-microscope, the washing machine as well as pablum and instant mashed : ¥§ potatoes. 'In conclusion, I can only reiterate what I said at the outset, that I stand in awe of the achievement I see before me. |, 3 All of you involved in this project have ventured where no one has ventured before, and you have been success- ful in your mission. More important, we are already reaping the benefits of your work as will future generations. I think - your place in history is assured, and on behalf of this gener- ation I want to thank you.
