(continued) Ontario Riding MP Norm Cafik said he favoured the airport east of "Toronto, , though he would have pre- » & 4 Ry v FE NR A 0 ferred to see its 'location "'eyen further east, out of my riding." He called the site an - "'emotional issue," and expressed concern for con- stituents who will be directly affected by the site. He added that the economic impact would be "great." In Port Perry, Reeve Robert Kenny said the site is "Fine as far as I'm con- cerned." He said it woulq mean more residential growth for Port Perry, "but probably not much more." With regards to regional government, the reeve said the airport would cause two things to happen: Pickering could either go as -part of Metro, or become part of an Oshawa-centred region. He added the airport would have a bearing on the boundaries of the region, and could speed up the creation of the region. He added that the location of the site didn't really surprise him hecause of what he called *McKeough's power," though 'he did think the site might have gone further to the north, Regional govern- ment will be spurred this way, and will depend on the new city. But Pickering will definitely not go .to Metro, added Mr. Jackman. Scugog Township reeve Cecil Fralick said "I don't think the site will bother us too much though it could induce some growth in the area." He said that although Scugog Island would have made a good airport, the ecology of the island would have ~been ~wrecked --com- pletely. Mr. Fralick ex- pressed the opinion that the airport might have gone further north, "to escape the high land costs. >' And he had & Grieve A Sb DY Friday -- New Closing Hours Monday -- Thursday 11:30 p.m. 'Saturday 1:00 a.m. = Sunday =--- 10:00 p.m. RE A Solid wood sides, bottoms, endgates. Reach Township deputy reeve Mrs, Lucille Gray said since 'I've never flown in an airplane and probably never will, I didn't give the site much though, It's going to be close enough where it is, and I'm just happy it's, not on Scugog Island." Mrs. Gray had some opinions on the good farm land at the airport site. "It's getting discou- raging for the farmer," she said, "who can't farin on poor land these days, " Reach Township Counci- llor Fred Christie said the ° airport location is "all right," 'and should have no immediate effect on Reach. The site did cause him surprise, as he thought it might have gone in the Burketon area. Mr, Christie said the airport kills Pic- kering's chances of going to Metro, and thus plans for a regional government in this area could be accelerated. The exact location' of the airport will be east of Highway 48 between. the east-west CPR rail line and Highway /7. ; With, + the: announcement less than a week old, there have already been serious objections raised by persons directly affected. PORT PERRY STAR ~ Wednesday, March 8,1972 -- 11 Reaction to airport site Simon Van Dyk R.R.1, Port Perry '"The airport will be a good thing for the town in that it will provide jobs, and this will bring about a population increase. I thought myself they might put it on the Island = (Scugog) and this would have -meant all the secondary industries coming right into this area. Noise? I guess there will be some, but improvements are being made all the time to cut down on this." Mrs. Whitney Cohoon Port Perry "The site chosen is an excellent place for the air- port. It is better than on the Island, although I don't think it would have bothered me too much. The airport should be good for business and this area should grow because of it. I wasn't surprised at the selected site, as it appears to be 'the most intelligent place considering proximity to Metro and other industrialized areas. But I guess people would fight an airport no matter where it goes." Mrs. Dorothy Nelson Port Perry ' "I think the site is close enough to be convenient, to bring industry to our area, yet at the same time we shouldn't get ali the adverse affects. The selected location _did surprise me a little. I think they should have considered using poorer land ndfth of the site, and not good farm land. I thought at one time it could go on the Island, as this seemed like a logical place." Prince Albert Another week, another storm. How long until spring?
