REALE A MA SE Gh AE RS 18-PORT PERRY STAR-Wednesday, March 15, 1972 REA ERATURE Ha Rav RAY: Sag ELIS | Bax ASHBURN NEWS Church attendance was down somewhat last Sunday morning, owing to the icy road conditions. Rev. Black's - sermon title was "Ruthless Opposition" bas: ing his sermons on the theme Calvary Viewpnint for the month prior to Eas- ter. Music by the Junior Choir. . The Ladies Bible Class held their monthly meet. ing at the home of Mrs Mildred Routley, Brooklin, on Wednesday evening. March 8th with 14 ladies present. The meeting opened with the singing of the hymn "When I Survey the Won: drous Cross". The -scrip- ¥ Ho v As | see it BY JOHN B., McCLELLAND The Ontario Addiction Research Foundation has just released preliminary results of testing to * determine the medical and psychological affects of marijuana. After observing a group of about 50 healthy males smoking grass daily for three months in a tightly controlled clinical setting, the Foundation says it has found no short-term, adverse affects on the users. During the three-month study the group was confined to quarters in the Addiction Research building in Toronto. The subjects smoked grass each evening, and during the day made stools and wove belts to earn tokens which could be used to buy either marijuana, or such things as tobacco, alcohol, newspapers, toothpaste, soap etc. Ei The observers say there was no noticeable deterioration in the quality of the subjects' work, even! that work done while directly under the influence of grass. Of course a study such as this has one very basic' flaw; a flaw which is readily acknowledged by the study directors. Smoking grass in a clinical setting,' knowing that you are being observed etc., is one thing. Smoking marijuana as part of your existence in the world outside a clinic is something else. Can the results affects marijuana smoking may have onsociety as a whole? Of course not. And there is another flaw. All the subjects were described as being '*healthy."" I would presume this to mean a normal mental balance along with physical "well being. I'believe now, and have believed for quite some time that .a mentally and physically healthy person using grass on even a regular basis will suffer no more adverse affects from it, then he would from "say. an equivalent use of alcohol. Indeed, I have known many persons who used marijuana and or alcohol, on a fairly regular basis and continued to function in a - normal fashion, holding down decent jobs. attending university etc. And I've also known users of marijuana and or alcohol who went completely down the drain so to speak. The basic question about all this marijuana commotion is whether it in itself produces adverse affects in a person, whether that person would have suffered similar affects without marijuana, or whether a person was in 'bad shape' prior to ever using marijuana. : Tests. studies, psychological and psychiatric evidence can be given on the affects of marijuana from now until doomsday, and the answers will never be final. never be cut and dry. Of course if somebody can prove without a doubt that smoking grass does cause physical defects in the human body. then guidelines as to its use should be established by this. But nobody has done this. though there are lots trying hard enough. As I see it now. marijuana in itself is a harmless weed. A user of marijuana in itself is a harmless weed. A user of marijuana takes the chance of suffering deterimental affects much the same as a person takes a chance with the use of alcohol. driving a car. breathing the air. getting married. being born for crying out loud. So. what's all the fuss about? If I want to climb a mountain, that's my business: if I want to race fast cars. that's my business: if I want to get married and have kids. or if I want to have kids without getting married. that's my business: if I want to drink alcohol. smoke cigarettes, or heaven forbid even marijuana. that's my business. ' There are risks involved. There's nothing in the whole world. absolutely nothing, that doesn't have some degree of risk. Unless of course you want to live in some clinic.
