BERRILL Escape from a Silent World Not because the blast of the factory whistle, the' trains, planes, and snowmobiles that zoom in the night, | are sp wonderful to hear. But rather, it's so wonderful to be able to hear-them. We answer our: door-bell, make intelligent conversation on the telephone and enjoy table-talk, as a new experience. ; The thrill of these sdunds is the result of acquiring for us, a new sense. pin Having lived for all of our remembered years in a semi silent world and our only bridge of communication for a long .time being strictly mechanical. But an aid is just--an aid. Picking up some tones ignoring others, and putting the wearer into a hodge-podge existence. Blushingly, we recall some answers we gave to _ questions we'd guessed at--not even grazing the target of accuracy. And. many times a potential friendship was by-passed when a voice was found to be, below or above our range of understanding. No one wishes to publicize this handicap as we: = who have endured it know the witty stories based on (the hard of hearing) and, the resulting embarrassing moments. Just as a speakers (punch line) is alwasys in a lower key, our dearest friends and family, never learn to read the pleading in our eyes *'Please speak louder" or, 'Please look at me when you speak." Frustrations? Yes.. While some, with a lot of patience can learn to cope, others hibernate even more deeply into a world of silence. Unconsciously, we still reach for the volume control on our eye glasses (thinking to lower it now) and hesitate before dialing a strange 'number. Wondering momentarily if we'll. be able to hear. But. in reality. car doors slam. The tea kettle sings. Newspapers and bed-sheets rustle. It's all new to us and. it's all music. Like a little girls whispered secret. The birds chattering their bird-language "Thank you" from a window-ledge feeder, or the lyrics of an old love-song we'd never quite heard before.
