He said if the # three municipalities agree to explore amalgamation further, the next step would be to work out financing, debts, and details as to what would happen to personnel now employed by the three + municipalities. One advantage of amal- gamation said Mr. Kenny would be the ability of the municipality to afford better . technical help, and increased consultant assistance. He #»; mentioned the possibility of a full-time engineer. He also * mentioned per capita grants for such things as recreation facilities. Speaking in more general terms, Mr. Kenny said that in today's day and age, mun- 4 icipalities cannot be isolated, and simply can't do things individually any more. "The municipalities", said Mr. Kenny, "were set up 100 years ago when it took a whole day to go from Port so: Perry to Whitby." Acknowledging that amal- gamation could cause some apprehension on the part of rural citizens with regards to sewer and water services, Mr. Kenny said "if you've got water and sewer service, you pay for it. If you don't have it, you don't pay." He expressed the opinion that with the advent of regional government the three municipalities would be able to 'speak with a '® stronger voice if we stayed * together." The meeting will take place in the Port Perry municipal office. -- were Carol McLaurin 'the Best students indicated they have quit smoking (or are altemp- ling to quit smoking) as a result of the campaign last week. ca . Five staff members described as 'heavy smokers' have deci- -ded-to-give up the weed. And Mr. Stan Lefort, who teaches auto mechanics, hds formed a $2:00 Club which costs nothing to join (other than giving up smoking) but anyone who wants out of the Club must pay $2.00, as must any Club member seen smoking. The. treasury is empty, so far. Staff organizers of the campaign are very pleased with the results, in that the whole purpose was to get students to give up smoking, or at least make them aware of the potential dangers involved. In the near future, there are plans to screen the controversial CBC film "One Way to Quit," and to let parents see this film as well. It is hoped that students who quit smoking as a result of the campaign, might put some pressure on their smoking parents to also give up the habit. The campaign did reveal one distressing aspect.
