Jin ve ind Tr of 8 1S =. g [4 Million dollar Editor, Port Perry Star, Port Perry, Ontario. Dear Sir: In the June 28th edition of the Port Perry Star, the Reach Protective Associa- tion wrote a letter to the Township clerk regarding public meetings for object- tions to By-law 2184. I would like to submit my own observations on the same subject. One significant event has taken place since the Reach ratepayers were offered that golden opportunity to raise * objections to a proposed new By-law 2184, and that was the election of December 6th last year. Since that time, one elected member has been insidiously smoothing out some of the causes of friction between the Port Perry Council and a developer with "Million Dollar" ideas. It-has hecome quite obvious that much of the mood of the whole council is manipulated by and for the ultimate personal gain of this developer. How do the rate- _- payers of Reach figure in this affair? Why do 'we take second place? The lack of enforcement of our existing By-laws, due to , circumstances known to our » council, the Greefibank air- "port is still permitted to operate despite the fact that Above Ground Kits from $129.95 Sw me EDITOR + Some 0 its operation has been an illegal one for two years. Is it no longer fashionable to enforce the old By-laws before the new By-laws are at least approved? Itis apparent thatthese are the new questions to be put to our elected council if, and when, we are finally able to voice our objections at the promised public hear- ings. . Sincerely, A Concerned Ratepayer. Murray Burnfield | PLUMBING - HEATING - ELECTRIC SUPPLIES No agreement reached at meeting of local council : Failure of the councils of Port Perry and Reach to work out an agreement for the construction of a new well and the method by which water would be allocated has prompted Reach Council to pass a motion requesting the Minister of the Environment totake over development and allocation according to recommendations made to him on this matter two weeks ago, The recommendations that Reach is asking the Minister to proceed with include the building of a new well by the Ministry which will impose how much water Reach gets and how much Port Perry gets; the sharing of the ground water supply with the users paying; a common sewage system for Reach and Port Perry (where practical) with costs to be established for users on a consumption basis. "This thing is contrary to what I believe are good planning principals, and I don't believe it should be built until the need is there," said Mr. Jackmanreferring to the. proposed shopping plaza. When asked for a vote on the proposals, Mr, Jackman also said he didn't think a: vote would be proper because Port Perry Council did not have full representation at the meeting. (Councillor Grant McDermott was absent). Port Perry Reeve Robert Kenny who had worked out the proposals with Reach Reeve Sam Oyler and had that negotiations between Reach and Port. Perry would be successful was disappointed at the impasse. "I've done all I can," said Mr. Kahny, " the Minister goes ahead with the recom- mendations, I don't think it will be too advantageous to / Port Perry." . Mr. Kenny feels that adoption of the proposals would have allowed for what he called the "phasing in" of the residential and commer- cial development corres- ponding with the completion of the industrial seactor. Meeting (continued small town image of the community. It was further suggested a holding company should be established and invite all those interested in preserv- ing and improving the present shopping are in the Village to participate.
