Gillian Blood; 16 and Margaret Drury, 13, live in the Midlands of England, not too far from - Manchester. Gillian is from Stoke on Trent,Staffordshire County, and Margaret from Ashley in Shropshire County. The girl's fathers work for a company that makes machinery which Mr. Jack- son has purchased for the Flamingo Pastries plant, and it was through this association that the trip for the two girls was made possible. Margaret visited Port Perry briefly with her father last October, but for Gillian, this was the first time she had ever been out of Britain. During their stay, the girls visited most of the major attractions in southern Ont- __ario including Niagara Falls and a ride on the Maid of the Mist, the Science Centre and the Toronto = Dominion Tower, Point Pelee, which as Gillian pointed out is Can- ada's most southern point, and a boat trip through the Trent system and the Peter- borough locks. The girls also had a complete tour of Ottawa including the House of Commons, the Peace Tower. They had their pic- ture taken with a couple of Mounties, and had a look at Prime Minister Trudeau's home, which they said was much more impressive than British Prime Minister Edward Heath's residence in London. B oth Gillian and Margaret found much in Canada to their liking, especially they said, steaks and hamburgs cooked on an outdoor bar- b-que. They were also im- pressed with the size of the cars here, although they found it a little funny driving on the "wrong" side of the road. Since traffic moves on the left side of the road in England, both girls said they had to be careful crossing streets in Canada as they are used to cars coming from the ~ opposite direction. Both girls said they en- joyed the variety of TV programming in Canada. In Britain there are just three channels and the programs don't start until late in the afternoon. They found the game shows fascinating, especially 'The Newly- weds," and "All in the Family" was also a favou- rite. Like most people who visit a foreign country, the girls admitted that the strange money presented a bit of a problem. Gillian siad it took her quite a while to de- termine the value of Cana- dian goods as she found herself converting the Can- adian price first into the "old pence" system and then into 'new pence." Sales tax was also a slight problem, as there is none in England. But the difference between Canada and England that seemed to intrigue the girls most were the accents and the "funny" expressions Canadians use such as 'I guess 80," and "what do you ERY know." They also remarked at the different words Cana- dians used such as trunk for boot, hood for bonnet, side- walk for pavement and highway for motorway. And. also, that instead of saying 'tra' people in Canada say goodbye, or so long, or see you. "While visiting Niagara, the . girls tried to cross into the United . States but were turned back at the border because they did not have visas. They did see Detroit from the Windsor side and were amazed to learn that - Detroit has an average of two murders a day. Gillian and Margaret flew back to England on Tuesday, and like Canadian kids their age will be starting schools September 5. Gillian has hopes to some day be.a radiographer, and Margaret' 'is interested in nursing or veterinary work. Both have a keen desire to some day come back to, Canada, especially in the winter to try snowmobiling and ice skating. In the meantime they're going to tell all their friends in England about this country; the good food, the TV programs, the words to O Canada, the funny way Canadians talk, and the 3 strange words they use. | Distinctive Bigger and Better Horse Races with Pari-Mutuel Privileges on Sunday & Monday HORSE and CATTLE SHOW WOMEN'S DIVISION RIDES, GAMES, MIDWAY HORSE SHOE PITCHING Children 25c¢ Adults $1.00 Autos 50c WATSON x WRESTLING vs MASKED THE Assassins : CHIEF Little Bear shwns> MIDGETS rwrion SPECIAL ATTRACTION Happy Farmer Humphrey 520 Ib. vs Lord Fauntleroy 520 Ibs.
