Thornlea Texal Of Facts and Fantasy | by Reta M. Berrill When Balloons and Egos go Pop We all know them--just when our ego has been puffed to capacity (swoosh) someone has stuck a pin into us. Perhaps we deserved it and--maybe we didn't. Everyone has that need to feel elated with himself sometimes. How else could we survive? Not everyone is gifted with the art of giving compliments any more than being endowed with any other talent. But at least, most of us know our limitations, and refrain from criticism and cattiness. Also, a smile of encouragement is of greater value than awkward words. But it's those who derive pleasure . Bom throwing their poisoned barbs with heedlessness or the feelings of others, while priding themselves on rive calling a spade, a spade--whom at times we could cheerfully choke. . _ But it isn't the words that hurt us, it's our disappointment in the person who used them. And the saddest aspect of these characters is, they think they're the Soul of Wit. Years ago when our home was new and its interior being dressed piecemeal and patiently, we were perhaps unduly proud of each finished project. And one day we experience this (put down). A party close to the family arrived unexpectedly and we in eagerness showed her our latest accomplishment. She eyed the room's new dress from eiling to draperies taking note of every nook and corner, then, without the slightest comment or look of approval left the room. And turning to the next one which was still functioning with bare walls and oddments from another place, she said, 'Boy, those curtains have sure faded." Another time--having recently emerged from an episode of sadness we commented that a certain party had been particularly kind to us, coming a distance and frequently, to check on our welfare and cheer us. We were very grateful. But we related this to one who said, "Huh" with an exhale of breath that, translated, could mean, "How naive can you be?" And added, "That's just a nice drive and she does like to be on the go." After our debut to the world of sound we were skimming along on Cloud Nine in perfect harmony with every harpist in heaven, when someone said, "Oh yes, dear cousin Gertrude had that operation and she could hear just fine for awhile too. But now ... ." We climbed down carefully, That could be a long way to fall. So--if you notice that your brother whom you haven't seen for a long time has acquired some unneeded pounds, you're not going to hear him say "You're a sight for these tired eyes Sis" if you greet him first with "Wow, but you've gotten fat!" He's aware of this and probably already embroiled with the Battle of Bulge. While your cute remarks are equal to the act of sifting salt on an open sore. We believe that, if you can't say of grandma's hat "It is becomming" and you're double-bent on being truthful, maybe you could say "It's such a pretty blue." Nothing and no one is all bad. So if we're willing to look for it we'll find something to save the situation, and what might be a case of hurt feelings. There's so much hurt in this world over which we have no control, that surely we should be able to think, before we commit ourself to the responsibility envolved in hurting our fellowman. And save ourself some colorful epithets. o 1. T. Robert Flett, Sire: Supreme 2. F. Roy Ormiston, Sire: Roybrook Ace. Class 9 - Cow, 5 Years and Over, Dry 1. F, Roy Ormiston, Sire: Roybrook Ace. 2.
