The Port Perry High teachers' boycotting of last weeks' commencement ex- ercises was one skirmish in this trench warfare. The teachers are determined to hold their own until the Ontario County board gives in. They feel that their professional pride as well as their futures are at stake: The teachers handed out a stencil containing a list of the issues. The number one priority according to the teachers is to establish meaningful negotiations with the board. "we want to discuss', but the trustees won't even sit down. They included a list of itgms directly affecting their wel- fare which should be nego- tiated; sick leave, educa- tional improvement leave (like a sabbatical), re- sponsibility allowances for department heads, etc.), health plans, retirement gratuities, a teacher transfer - policy and the increased teacher work load. Other areas of concern mentioned were class size, provincial expenditure = ceilings, the problem of centralization of mammoth secondary schools and the dehuman- izing effects of modern education. Port Perry teachers are no longer solely concerned about salaries. They want the board to sit down and discuss with them details of their contract. They want job security to prevent teachers from being shuffled around from school to school. They want to bargain in good faith with trustees. And unless the board begins to accede to some of these demands, the present situation is likely to deteriorate. Mr. Dekker stated that "we are taking this stand now because we don't want to go through the same tiresome process each year. But the students are frus- trated and so are we." Hopefully, the near future will bring some solution to the problem or it is entirely likely that the whole village of Port Perry will be frustrated too.
