New vaccine announced by Minister A measles-rubella vaccin- ation program for the pro- tection of children between the ages of one year through the first year of school entry has been instituted by the Ontario Ministry of Health. In announcing the pro- gram today, Health Minister Richard T. Potter, M.D, said that all areas of the province have been stocked with. vaccine. All practising physicians have been noti- fied of sources of vaccine supplies and have received a recommended immunization schedule. "It is important that all such children receive their vaccination as soon as poss- ible after their first birthday to ensure protection during the entire pre-school and school period. This calls for a co-operative effort by pa- rents and' practising physi- cians." The combined vaccine will be free. It will provide protection against both mea- sles (red) and rubella (Ger- man measles) in a single injection. Infants under the age of 12 months should not be given the vaccine because the presence of maternal antibodies may interfere with the immunizing re- sponse. Complications often deve- lop in a child who contracts measles. These.include pne- umonia, convulsions, middle ear infection and inflam- mation of the brain. Rubella . vaccination of young children will also reduce the risk of infection among women in child-bear- ing years who have.not had the disease. Rubella con- tracted by a woman during the early months of preg- nancy can result in the birth of a baby with serious congenital abnormalities. The earlier in pregnancy the fetus is infected, the more severe the handicaps may BURKETON NEWS Mrs. E. Bryan spent a day this week with Mr. and Mrs. Orval Greer, Oshawa. The ones that do are usually the smaller ones, unhampered by weight. The average age for walking is between 13 and 14 months. The speed with: which the baby acquires this new skill depends a great deal on the individual child's curiosity and opportunity for practice. Da sal EY. Ry ee, a -- CERT RE TERI SNe.
