Dec. 13.1972 - 21 making for a naturally clegant gait The hackney breed origin ated in England, the founda- tion sire being a horse called Shales foaled in 1760. The animals were bred for spirit and class since their purpose was (and had been until recently) to function as carriage horses. If a lady wanted to be in the height of fashion in London in 1830, say, a "coach and four" with perhaps two postilions was a between the shalts was the horse that was bred and developed explicitly for that purpose; the hackney. For some people, the word "hackney!" may be nothing more than an entry in the Oxford dictionary listed over "haddock". But to Ralph Sadler and other horse breeders in the Port Perry area the hackney, a pure- bred horse. is more than a definition; its a way of gaining a living. Last week, the Star visited Mr. Sadler's residence, pone mile east of Caesarea, to look into the horse breeding business. The hackney is that elegant high-stepping purebred horse often seen at fairs and exhibitions in a wire wheeled buggy with a spruce looking gent on the box. The breeder owns some 35 such horses, not counting other animals which are boarded on his farm. WAS BLACKSMITH Mr. Sadler, originally a blacksmith, has always liked working with horses. One day he bought a hackney and began to breed it. He soon became so busy breeding and selling the animals for a profit, there was no time left To the people of REACH TOWNSHIP who supported me at the polls on December 4th Please accept my sincerest THANKS | wish for you a Happy "Holiday Season and a Prosperous New Year. A ten year old stallion, the farm's show-" piece and reputedly the sole survivor of the pure blooded hackney strain, is presently used for breeding purposes. All horses are thoroughly trained and, by a long arduous process, turned into virtuoso performers which have habitually captured top honors wherever they are shown. The hackney could perhaps be regarded as the archetype of the purebred horse. Of medium height (varying be- tween 14 hands, 2 inches and 16 hands) and size, the well-muscled animals are characterized by proudly arched necks, erect ears, high hindquarters, and shorn tails. Their trade-mark, that which distinguishes them from other purebreds, is the high step; it might almost be considered a "'prance". The knees are brought up high while the hocks are flexed, HA. E.
