ity afl 5 1 Se "Cartwright reeve gives his opinion on Regional Government proposal Last week the Star ran an "opinion page", asking sev- eral concerned citizens in the area what they felt about the advent of regional govern- ment. Reeve Lawrence Mal- colm of Cartwright Town- ship failed to make the deadline, so we present his opinion this week. "You asked me for my thoughts on the Oshawa Region as proposed by the Ontario Provincial govern- ment, "First I think we have to recognize that this is no hair-brained plan being fois- ted on us by a fly-by-night irrespeusible government. It is the result of five solid years of discussion and planning. Already, several regions are in operation across Ontario with no indication of them being abandoned. Whether the new system will be better than what we have now, I do not know. I do know that it will be just as good as the new council that will be elected to take charge of it - and no better. "I thinkthe Local Council proposed for this area is too small to represent an area as large as Reach, Port Perry, Cartwright, 'and Scugog. Four more local members elected from wards, plus the Mayor and Regional Counc- illor elected at large, might be better. "There will be a lot for this council to do and yet it would not be a full time job. So, the Local Council will have to be composed of people with more than a few free evenings to spend next year. "I think the Road Depart- ment may present the new council with the biggest problem. It may have to be operated as three or four separate units, each under a Road Supt. or foreman directly responsible to coun- cil, with a budget for each. The rest of the respon- Seagrave News The community was stunned this morning (Mon.) on hearing of the sudden death of an old friend Mr. Alvin Bruce. While we knew that his health had been failing somewhat, the end was quite unexpected. Mr. Bruce, his: wife and family lived many years here and need no introduction in this part of the country. We extend sympathy to the sorrowing relatives. Funeral services will be held in Port Perry on Thursday at 2 o'clock. | Things are now back to normal after the holiday season so there isn't much to report this week. The new U.C.W. executive met at the Beacock home last Thursday evening to plan for their meeting on Wednesday of this week... Come out and see what they did. Here is a message from Mrs. Nicholls. -- "Any girls who will be 12°by March 1, 1973 and are interested in taking the spring 4H unit are asked to contact Mrs. Nicholls right away this week." Mr. and Mrs. Nodwell who have been away south for a 10 day trip returned to the land of ice and snow on Tuesday. Sunday afternoon guests of Mr. and Mrs. B. Wanamaker were Mr. and Mrs. Ryall Lowry of Orono. So we have a budding cartoonist in our midst. Good luck Bill. The Clifford Short family had a combined New Years - birthday gathering on Sun- day. They were honouring mother and grandmother, Mrs. Gladys Short. The annual S.S. meeting took place on Sunday eve- ning as announced with an attendance of 15. Some of the reports were ready and showed the S.S. to be in fairly good position financially. There will be only a few changes in the officers for 1973. Mr. Clifford Short has served his time as supt. so retires. New supers elected were Gordon Short and Bob Bruce. Teachers remain the same. Date for S.S. anniver- sary was set for May 27 and there will be no lunch this year. July and August will be holiday months. ~ It was really cold on Sunday morning but 9 of our adult ladies ventured out minus hats, and the con- gregation was much as usual. Communion service was conducted by Rev. Critch with elders Mrs. Boe: and Mrs. Clements assisting. The choir sang a communion hymn from the new hymn book. S.S. was slightly lower than usual in attendance. Supt. Beacock read a letter from Fred Victor Mission thanking us for the gifts sent. No-one responded to the call for birthday money so supt. Beacock slipped in a couple of coins for his own birthday. The . session meeting planned for Thursday eve- ning has been postponed for a week because of the funeral of a former elder Mr. A. Bruce. ® LIONS CLUB OF PORT PERRY INC. eo has been called. Watch for result in next issue! sibilities proposed for the Local Council could probably be handled as one unit. "Ido not see the purpose of including the Port Hope- Cobourg area in this region. "I think the taxes should be collected by the body that levies them. For example, the school beards should do their own collecting which was the intention when they were first set up. Instead, the Local Council takes the static for all when they go up. "I am optimistie enough to think that the new system of local government will not be all bad,if as, and when it descends on us. Indeed there may be many good things in it that we do not as yet know about. Most of us are inclined to view change with sceptism or worse." 33c PRICES EFFECTIVE Wed. to Sat. Our deepest sympathy is extended to Mr. Grant Christie who, during the week lost his wife as a result of being hit with an auto- mobile. The other prizes were won by Shaw Hamilton, Herman Abbott, John Kelly (3) Edgar Butt and Russ Brown. Congratulations to Her- man Abbott who celebrated his 61st birthday on January 3rd.
