Rely HEIRS 2 SAN SE TT -- ad war 16 -- PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, Jan. 10th, 1973 17 Ontario County Reeves endorse Regional proposal A special committee of the 17 reeves of Ontario County has endorsed the external boundaries of the proposed Oshawa region with the provision that the eastern boundary be the east limit of Clarke Township. Pickering Township Reeve John Williams, 'who pro posed the boundary motion stated the proposed region as outlined by the provincial government is too large, and Port Hope and Cobourg have already expressed a wish not to be placed in the Oshawa region The committee, which met for four hours Friday, also made a recommendation that county council request the province to assure that existing educational and community services in the county such as Lakeview Manor in Beaverton, a home for senior citizens, will continue to be enjoyed by the residents of the present county when restructuring takes place REPORT TO COUNTY The committee voted to report its proceedings to county council at the Jan- uary session, and meet again Feb. dere discussion took place on the internal boundaries and the wishes of the northern municipalities which are not included in the new region. Brock Township Reeve Keith Rynard informed the committee that Brock and Thorah Townships and Bea- verton and Cannington Vil- lages had voted unanimously Wednesday to go to the York Region as recommended by the province Scott Township Reeve Norman Lyons reported he personally did not want to go to the York region but could not speak for his munici- pality because it had not yet decided which way to go. He pointed out that the township had wanted to remain with Uxbridge Town and Township in its previous position papers and had favored joining a rural region of northern munici- palities. Peter Forbes, reeve of Mara Township expressed concern about what will happen to existing services in the new regional setup. "I want the services clari- fied before I give whole- hearted support," he said. "We prefer to remain with Brock and Thorah, but wish to remain with the county if it remains as today. A motion by Reeve Rynard to include the northern townships of Ontario County in a region extending east to Clarke Township failed to obtain the committee's ap- proval, as did a motion from Reeve Lyons to include Scott Township int he new region without the other northern townships. An amendment to endose the external boundaries as the new outlined by the proving was also lost. Severl of the northern representatives expressed reservations about regional government. Reeve Robert Nesbitt of Uxbridge Township urged the committee members to see how best they could live with regional government now that it is sure to come. A suggestion to ask the province to extend the Feb 28 deadline for submissions came from Scugog Reeve Clifford Crowell, who wanted to learn the reasons why certain townships are being placed in certain areas. Reeve Nesbitt referred to this procedure by the province as 'a checker game where you end up here and we end up there." "You are wasting your time asking for delay," Chairman Tom Edwards of Whitby, told the committee members. East Whitby Reeve John Howden and Ajax Reeve Dave Trebilcock expressed concern about the position of the airport and Cedarwood in the regional program, the details of which have not been announced. Reeve Howden also ex- pressed concern about representation in the regional council with the eastern boundary of the region moved back to Clarke Township, and said he did not like the ward system. A suggestion from Reeve Former Ontario Premier George Drew Dies George Drew, former pre; mier of Ontario and former national leader of the Pro- gressive Conservative party died Thursday, last week. Mr. Drew, 78, was national leader of the Conservative party between 1948 and 1956. As premier of Ontario before that, his victory in the provincial general election of 1943 began an unbroken 29 years of Conservative government in the province: Mr. Drew had been in Wellesley Hospital since Nov. 19 following a heart attack complicated by pneumonia. Crowell to square off Scugog so the north shore of the lake would be included in the Oshawa region for the sake of providing services did not meet with much response. Reeve John Williams of Pickering warned the com- mittee to consider such things as representation and allocation of functions when discussing the regional pro- posal. Several of the reeves stated they would prefer to have a second meeting of the committee after their coun- cils had met with provincial officials.
