2) Save Obstetrical Wing protest letter sent to Queens Park A Seagrave woman has sent her objection to the Port Perry Hospitals Obstet- rical Wing, directly to the Minister of Health, Dr. R.S. Potter. . As part of its preparation to bringing regional govern- ment to this area Queens Park has sent out a couple of samplers to show what regionalization really means. One of the samplers is the move to close the 4 vear old obstetrical or **baby wing" of our hospital in order to regionalize ma- ternity functions of regional hospitals. In a letter to the Health Minister January 27, Mrs. Marilyn Beacock deplored the proposal and paid tribute to the advantages of a smaller, more localized maternity ward. Her letter is good enough to publish in its entirety. . Editor Dr. R.S. Potter, Ministry of Health Welfare, Queens Park, Toronto, Ontario. and Dear Dr. Potter: I was shocked and ap- palled when I learned of the proposed closure of the obstetrical ward of Com- munity Memorial Hospital in Port Perry. As you no doubt are aware, this hospital is a completely. new structure and has only been in operation since 1969, at the present site. Consider- ing the size of this hospital, it is reasonably well-equipped and very efficiently organi- zed and represents a source NEED MUSIC? The staff as a whole, are courteous, efficient and have a very genuine concern for each of their patients. I don't believe that there is any place in the hospital where this is more appreciated by the patient than in the labour and delivery rooms. The visiting hours in the maternity ward are from 3 until 8 every day and we are fortunate enough to have a 'rooming-in' plan, if desired, in which allows new mothers to have their babies with them in their respective rooms. This privilege is greatly appreciated by the new parents and as far as I can determine, this system is not used by the Oshawa General Hospital or the Cottage Hospital in Ux- bridge. Our local hospital serves a very large area extending approximately 15 miles in each direction and a great majority of the gentlemen of the area are employed at General Motors in Oshawa and work both: day and evening shifts. If the pro- posed idea of sending expec- tant mothers to the Cottage Hospital, for instance, IS decided upon, please con- sider the INCONVENIENCE this increased mileage will cause- the husbands. It will be almost impossible for those living in outlying areas to visit their wives, if they are working the evening shift, as the visiting hours at the Cottage Hospital are from 2:30 - 8:00 and a good proportion of these men would have to leave for work at about 4:30. Not only is it an incon- venience to the husbands it is certainly a greater one to our local doctors as many of TRAVEL NONQUON SERVICE 160 Queen St. -- Port Perry 985-2336 Special to TOTAL COST PER PERSON WWVA JAMBOREE (Wheeling, West Virginia) DOC WILLIAMS SHOW HELEN & BOBBY SCOTT * THE HECKELLS February 16th to 18th, 1973 4 to a room $46.00 3 to a room $48.00 PRICE INCLUDES return transportation by air-conditioned, washroom-equipped bus, first class accommodation in down- town Wheeling at the Downtowner Motor Inn and special reserved seat for the Jamboree. I findit extremely difficult to understand WHY the former O.H.S.C. and the Ontario Government could not forsee this situation before they approved the construction of this wing just four years ago. This building represents many long hours of fund- raising and personal pledges in an area where our average incomes are pro- bably in the neighbourhood of between $6,000. to $10,000. yearly. It takes no great mathematician to realize the strain that this has put on some pocketbboks. x aA ee I. b The thing that disturbs the people of this area and mysell MOST about this entire proposal is that we are told that this particular ward must be closed entirely! It apparently can not be used as an active treatment wing OR a chronic care ward OR a paediatric unit. May we ask who IS to be responsible, financially, for the main- tenance of this unit or-are we Just to stand by and let it collect dust! Beside the wasted space that this idea will create there is certainly a good share of the local taxpayers money that might as well have been thrown on the waters of Lake Scugog' for your dollar Sale amidst nnbo slots oan an Be rE PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Jan. 31,1973 -- § Betore closing, may | ask you lwo questions" (1) Would you enjoy driving 30 miles to visit your wife or family it there were ade quate facilities within a few miles of your residence" (2) If you and some of your neighbours had strived to raise a considerable sum of money to build a large public building such as our-hospital, would you be content to have someone tell you to close a large and useful portion of it, completely" The people of this area and myself would sincerely appreciate it if you would reconsider your proposal to close this very essential obstetrical department an our local hospital Sincerely Mrs. Marilyn Beacock, Seagrave, Ontario The Port Perry Star will be interested in seeing copies ol letters sent by other people to the health minister, our arca M.P.P.s, or beth A.
