"MyrtleWomen's Institute Hold Dessert Luncheon Seventeen Ladies (mem- bers and friends) of Myrtle Women's Institute, met at the home of Mrs. Clarence Harrison, for a dessert luncheon before our meeting on Wednesday, February 21st, at 1:00 p.m. The meeting opened by singing the Institute Ode and repeating the Mary Stewart Collect in unison. the Motto "Busy hands are happy hands" was commented on by our Convener, of Educa- tion and Cultural Activities, Mrs. David Duchemin. Roll Call was answered by naming or displaying a craft made in your home. We are invited to attend Modelling Night at Ashburn Community Centre, on Mon- day evening, March 12th, at 8:00 p.m. when the ladies will display their garments made in the Sewing with Knits Course. Miracle Mart Food Stores are putting on a Consumer Night on Monday evening, March 26th at 8:00 p.m. to be held in Consumer Gas Building, Consumer Drive, Whitby. There will be refreshments and door prizes. Tickets are availale from any of the Branch Sec- retaries or the District Secretary at 655-3024 for a small amount. Since this is a District project, it is open to anyone, men or women as long as we have tickets. It will include the cutting of beef shown on a film, and a discussion of beef charts and private label brands, as well as a discussion on Consumer problems. Helpful hints for entertain- ing, such as giving a buffet, and cake decorating will also be discussed. All recipes are included in a small booklet and will be distributed at the Forum to those attending. This Forum is open to all interested ladies. The Officers' Conference will be held at the University of Waterloo this year, from May 1st - 3rd. Our Secretary, Mrs. Clarence Bryant is going as a delegate. The guest speaker for the afternoon was Miss Thelma Briggs who spoke on her many crafts, and displayed a large number, including an alligator, made from saw- dust, glue and vinegar; a pixie doll; flowers made from plastic foam egg cartons; flower arrange- ments. A coat hanger covered with woven plastic braid, a piece of hairpin work and many, many, more. She also advised us there is a small Lewiscraft Store in Oshawa, at the corner of King St. E. and Ritson Road. . Mrs. Duchemin brought us up to date on recent current events. It is nice to know that Baker Lake in the North West Territories, has its own radio station and street lights now. Since one of our member's sons is the weather man there, it makes ontinuing all 177 TS it all the more interesting to us. Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 21st, at the, home of Mrs. Arthur Parrinder, with a dessert luncheon at 1:00 p.m. the program will be on "The Ontario Government." All ladies welcome. There was a good turn out at the "Luncheon is Served," which was held in Myrtle United Church, on Wednes- day, February 28th at 12:30 p.m. The winner of the Grand Door Prize, a 3 pc. set of Floral Charm, decorated Cookware, was won by Mrs. Lorne Crawford, Brooklin. Sarah Coventry Jewellery put on a demonstration later in the afternoon, and Mrs. Wm. Parrinder, Brooklin, won a set of earrings; Miss Thelma Briggs, a Pearl Necklace, and Mrs. Arthur Parrinder a set of Cufflinks. 's Mrs. Meta Holtby, Mrs. Aletha Holtby and Miss Ruth Gishler attended the World Day of Prayer Service at Greenbank on Friday. Mr. and Mrs. B.D. Hitch- ins of Oshawa were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Mitchell, also called on Mr. J.E. Mitchell to wish him a happy birthday. Best wishes and a happy birthday to Mr. J.E. Mit- chell, who celebrated his 95th birthday on March 5. Mrs. Jean Luby and son visited with Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Mitchell one day this week. Mr. John Pollard of Greenbank was a luncheon guest with Mr. and Mrs. Grant Franklin recently. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Dobson visited with Miss Ottie Schubert in Oshawa, Sunday evening. Weekend guest with Mr. and Mrs. Art Fielding were Mr. and Mrs. Tom Hirst and Elizabeth of Midland. She is Mrs. Alice Staniland of Black- stock who was transferred from the Hillcrest Nursing Home in Port Perry. Mr. John B. Blake was trans- ferred to the Oshawa General Hospital and Mr. Cyril O'Connor was dis- charged and returned to his home in Oshawa. Pastor Payne of the Port Perry Baptist Curch was unable to attend the relgious service on Tuesday evening but he sent along a very capable substitute in his son Brian who conducted a splendid service. Others attending from the church were Mrs. Lloyd Beacock (pianist), Mr. and Mrs. Albert Smith, Patsy, Sharon, Stephen and Susan Smith, Mrs. Dave Aiken, Kathy and Paul Jones and Andy Mabley. The meeting opened PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, March 7, 1973 -7 with the singing of a hymn and prayers. Mr. Grant Christie expressed a vote of thanks to the Church members on behalf of the residents. On Thursday evening we again had a very successful Bingo. Ten .games were played and the prize winners were John Preston (2), Violet Edwards, Russ Brown (2) Minnie Merrick, Mae Clark, Marge Letcher, Bill Moroz and John Kelly The second phase of the Training Course for Nursing Aides is now in full swing The course is conducted by Mrs. Doris Taylor, R.N. in conjuction with Durham College and after the three terms of study are com- pleted leads to an award as a Government Health Nursing Aide. The following ladies, who have all completed the first phase of study are now studying the second course and Mary VanHam, Sarah Bursey, Patsy DeNure, Jean Nash, Jean Armstrong, Kay Young, Marion Gray and Alice Orliffe from the Port Perry Perry Community Nursing Home. June Car- nochan and Joan Kane from the Port Perry General Hospital and Mildred Roul- ston, Ruth Kydd, R. Lavren- son, Orma Boge and Carol McCrimmon from the Sun- nydale Nursing Home in Sunderland. Father Paul Vernooey of the Immaculate Conception was a very welcome visitor to the Home on Friday last. He served Holy Communion to the Catholic residents in the Home.
