Statistics . obtained from this program during 1972, when compared with those of 1971, indicate a slight improvement in two categories of dental health. The incidence of poor oral hygene was down to 18 percent from 30 percent and a one percent improvement in tooth decay is shown in comparison with 1971 figures. Certdinly, the No Decay" category is of greatest significance, and indeed it is of vital importance in program evaluation, plan- ning and comparison. Of particular concern is the eastern half of North- umberland County, where a Claims books obscene Education Minister Thomas Wells has refused to meet a Whitby clergyman to discuss claimed undesirable language in at least four books being read by high school students. Rev. R.H. James, of The Free Methodist Church, says Wells told him in a letter he should take the matter up with Ontario County's Direc- tor of Education, K. D. Monroe. The minister wants the books ,0f Mice and Men. The Moon is Down, They Shall Inherit The Earth and Catcher In The Rye. taken from the shelves of county high schools. He said he found the books "horrifying and disgusting" when he started to read them. Wells, in his letter to James, said different people have various opinions and cenvictions of what is moral and what is not. He pointed out that books in the school libraries are approved by local boards of education, but that, at one time, it was the respon- sibility of the department of education. James said he will seek a meeting with Monroe before deciding if he should approach the Ontario County - Board of Education. Gilbank 986-4868 Edmondson said he has received no complaints + about the books. "To suggest that such books are obscene would be to offer a highly personal and subjective judgement," said Edmondson. He stressed that the judgement of one man of what might be obscene may not be the judgement of another man. The board chairman said he has had a "passing acquaintance' with Catcher In The Rye and Of Mice and Men. "I am aware that in some literary circles they are considred to be writings of great merit and worthy of study," said Edmondson. Administrative assistant Cyril Taylor said the books in question have been in the schools for years and at least two of them are favorites of teachers and students. He said it is 'very difficult" to decide what might be obscene. "I am sure Rev. James means well and the matter will be discussed with Mr. Monroe," said Taylor Some members of the Oshawa and District Evan- gelistical Ministerial Associ- ation have received com- plaints from parishiners about the contents of the books. March 12 and 18, 34 occurred over the weekend. The report covers all areas in southern Ontario County except those towns which have their own police departments. The 37 accidents injured 9 persons and did $40,960 worth of damage. During the same period there were 5 thefts in the area, 2 break ins, 1 assault and 2 charges of malicious damage were laid. Three motorists were found to be impaired and there were 9 violations of the liquor control act. Parents . . . is your boy or girl presently riding his or her bike . . . A concerted effort is being directed to this area during the 1972 -.73 school year. Education officials and school principals are sup- porting this effort, which involves: (1) Greater teacher in- volvement in school dental health programs and projects. (2) opportunities to speak to teacher-parent groups. (3) comprehensive cover- age of this area in providing Topical Fluoride Treat- ments. (4) encouragement of dentists to establish practice in this area. However, upon comparing this figure with the provin- cial figure of 58 percent of 5-year olds - having No Decay," it leavés no grounds for complacency, and the priority for continuing to promote this program is certainly justified, says the health unit. Fluoride Supplement Promotion The objective of this program, initiated in Feb- ruary 1971, has been to encourage parents of child- ren in Durham counties to make use of the decay- preventive effects of fluoride supplements. These are in the form of tablets or drops which are administered to the child on a regular, daily basis, starting right after birth and continung until the permanent teeth have com- pleted their development (age 14). These same benefits could be obtained in towns by simply fluoridating the mun- icipal water supply, the unit claims. On the other hand, for those families who use well water, the use of fluoride supplements is the only way developing teeth can be influenced to form more resistant to decay, it adds. These benefits should not be confused with those provided by a dentist or dental hygienist in a topical fluoride treatment, (painting the teeth") which in simplest terms provides a surface- hardening effect, the health unit explains. Parents are encouraged to have their children make use of both of these preventive measures - fluoride supple- ments and topical fluoride treatments. imal health service Wallace Marlow Co.
