"The possibility of winning is increasing as each day passes - so is the possibility of finding a good candidate willing to stand and offer himself for election. I can think of two or three in this room." Mr. Kirkpatrick said the executive had met every four or five weeks since the election and had mulled over the reasons for their loss. "I think what we have to do now is to get ready for the next election." pe- aid. "It will be-hard work 'for any candidate who wants the situation." A visiting field organizer, Al Wilson, also stressed the need to find a suitable candiate soon. '"The election could be very close and it's very important that we start the rebuilding process." he "a e must start rebuilding even though we have no candidate yet. People must know that the Liberal Party is still alive and kicking in Northumbrland-Durham." Executive officers for the association were elected unopposed. The new president is Mrs. Shirley Johnston who takes over from Mr. Kirkpatrick, Vice-President is Harry Wade and four directors elected were Neil Malcolm, Blackstock; Gordon Broom- field, Haldimand; Don Williamson, Cobourg, and Stewart Raynor, Port Hope. Without the gener- ous donations of the Cana- dian public, support of cancer research would not be possible. Nor would the Society be able to continue its program. of public education and service to cancer patients. The entire emphasis of the 1973 fund-raising and educa- tion campaign is on action: the action of protecting oneself against cancer; the action of protecting others through this support of cancer research. Each dollar given to the Canadian Cancer Society goes to work in three ways against this cruel disease. The first way, support of research, second education, carried out by public education on the importance of early detection of cancer, third, the making and distributing of dressings, transportation for cancer patients, and hospital and home visiting, pamphlets ete. In Canada this year, it been pointed out, about 65,000 new Cancer patients will be diagnosed and half of these patients will be alive five years from now. So the messages in the education pamphlets that we read is a message of hope. But cancer cures don't just happen. While practicing preven tion is everyone's personal weapon against cancer, it's not the only weapon. Your support in this fund raising campaign will help research into cancer's cause, the search for a cure, and better methods for cancer patients.
