Almost without exception, schools are involving pa- rents of their community in a wide variety of ways. In some cases, parents have been invited to observe units of study being developed as they would in regular classroom work. In others, specialized displays illustra- ting specific subjects of themes have been set up. Many schools are taking advantage of Education Week to holdteacher inter- view and to discuss indivi- dual progress of students. Highlights in the Western Area include a presentation, "The Unique World of Switzerland", narrated by Mr. Anton Lendi on behalf of the Consulate General of Switzerland, a visit to the Western Area by the Silver Creek High School Choir from New York State, a Children's Art Exhibition and "Talent Night' with an open invitation to the entire community to attend and an informal get-together by parents and teachers at Solina School. This latter school has struck a unique note in advertising their Education Week Open House by one method only - posting "Welcome" signs on the outside of the school. Students of the Western Area are deeply involved in competion at the Kiwanis Music Festival during Edu- cation Week. Cartwright divided on Region Cartwright Township's representatives at Durham Northumberland council split in a vote over regionalization. United counties council presented the provincial government with an alter- nate proposal to the regional plan suggested by Queens Park. The alternate would have Durham North- umberland form a region of its own instead of joining the Oshawa - Ontario county region, Cartwright Reeve Law- rence Malcolm voted against the plan because he thinks his area has more in common with Port Perry than it has with Cobourg. Deputy » reeve ~ Vernon Asselstine disagreed. 'I definately voted for the United counties plan because I feel people in the United counties have little in common with Oshawa," he told the STAR. Mr. Asselstine estilaated that 90 percent of United county council members voted for the plan. And he pointed out that some councillors repre- sented towns which had their own alternate proposal. Most of these would prefer the. United counties plan as a second choice, he claimed. The provincial govern- ment proposal would have Cartwright become part of an amalgamated town with Port Perry, Reach and Scugog. The new town would be part of a region stretching from the Metro Toronto city limits to the west and Cobourg to the east. hdd i ee i dled di i Ge ee ee a CHICKEN - TURKEY Stouffer FRASERVILLE RUPERT or Tart tri i Swoo EE imported porcelain china Uiner-§ 19 Fl.
