ER -------- » LETTER TO THE EDITOR Profanity has no literary value Dear Sir: In the March 28 edition of your newspaper Miss Janice Stark states that she found my opinion, filthy language and the taking of God's name in vain in certain books is imoral and disrespectful, to be shocking and upsetting. She said that she and others found the same books to be of great literary value. I have no complaint concerning their value as literature, but 'I wonder, Janice, if the filthy language and the taking of God's name in vain were removed would the books still have literary value? The abusive way God's name is used in these and other books is obnoxious and discriminates against the Christian community which holds the namer of the Lord most precious, pure and holy. What you buy in stores, Janice, is your own private business. What is put into the hands of young people by public , schools is public business. I have a daughter entering grade nine next fall and I do not wish her to have such filthy books placed 'in her hands as study material. I do not want her to go through the shock and disgust of having to reach such books. The school board has no right -- our government has no right -- to take money in taxes from Christian fami- lies and spend it on books which destroy respect for Christian principals, or are hateful and disrectful of the very name Christians hold so dear. The Christian heart is wounded each time it hears or reads the Creators name taken profanely. You speak of problems in our system of education. The greatest problem that can Driving habits bad! Several months ago the © Minister of Transportation and Communications, the Hon. Gordon Carton, Q.C., commented in the press on the lack of courtesy on the part of commercial vehicles and their apparent disregard for the convenience of other users of the highways. He particularly pointed to com- mercial vehicles driving two and three abreast on hills and bridge approaches thereby preventing the pas- sage of faster moving traffic. At that time, the Minister suggested that unless the transportation industry, as a whole, policed itself and an improvement in the driving habits was noted, he would i hy 'H. & R. Effective im- mediately, trucks are not permitted to use the lefthand lane whenever a freeway has three or more lanes in one direction. On high volume freeways with only two lanes in one direction, signs advising "Slower Traffic Keep Right' are now being erected. While supporting the new legislation, observations of Ontario Safety League staff members indicate that the use of the left-hand lane by trucks on multi-lane high- ways is actually less of an impediment to the free flow of traffic than is the thought- less use of the centre lane. The. Ontario Safety League feels that the transportaion industry could take a real step in removing some of the tarnish from its image by voluntarily instructing its members to use the right- hand lane exclusively, ex- cept when passing. The ability, safety and courtesy of the commercial driver was once well noted. Here is an opportunity for the industry to regain some of the prestige it has lost with the public. Fred H. But, Janice, I take excep- tion to your claim that we lack awarneness and broad- mindedness. A few years from now you will realize that we did possess these qualities. May respect dominate our lives. The hearing itself has never been clearly spelt out. It was announced in Sept.- ember -- it is now April. Where is the hearing? Mr. Cafik is obviously adopting the arrogant man- tle of his leader when he picks on Miss Wanstall's letter as "inflammatory and stupid". It is too bad when an elected representative, a Federal M.P. descends to that type of language. I am, Yours very truly,' P.
