Like the people who lined up to scoff at Noah and his ark, experts in the concert business laughed at the plan of Harold and June Lossing to try and get enough people paying to hear gospel music to cover the cost of renting Massey Hall once a year. Today the concerts come three times a year, run two days each time, and sell out the over 3,000 available seats more than a month in advance. The overflow crowd of people who are turned away without tickets from Massey Hall is large enough to fill a dozen high school audit- oriums in smaller com- munities. Gospel quartet music 1s so unique that every attempt by hit parade singers to copy it has failed so far. The problem, from a commercial singers point of view, is that the music can not come from the larynix or the lungs. It can only come from the heart. The phenomenon is ex- plained on the back of the cover of a Blakely Singers record album, "They sing it because they believe it." Although the concert at the local high school has no connection with the Toronto sings (which have now been extended to take in every major Canadian city) the response is expected to be just as enthusiastic. The Blakely Singers and their fellow performers for this concert; The Freeman Quartet and the Gospel Heirs are well known to lovers of this unique art. 'In solo performances each group is used to full houses. The fact that all three are appearing together indicates that smart music lovers will be looking for tickets early. "They sing it because they . believe it."" If the quality of their faith. matches the quality of their singing then it must indeed be capable of moving mountains.
