Everything and anything bearing a Made in England label had to be the best. She enjoyed celebrating St. George's Day, Victoria Day, and could tolerate St. Valentine's Day. But Mother's Day had had itorigin in America so it had no meaning for her. And she always dismissed the topic with "Huh, every day should be mother's day." To disagree with her verbally would have been unthinkable. But we did disagree. Our argument would have been 'How could any mother endure being constantly poised on a pedestal?' Like subsisting on a daily diet of ice-cream and petits fours. The body needs the ordinary foods and the mothers need the ordinary rough-and-tumble of daily life. One Mother's Day is enough, and we do enjoy it. We know that our small-fry get a tremendous thrill in saving: and planning. And in choosing a card that says for them exactly what they're too tongue-tied to express. What mother doesn't have at least one drawerful of such memories? And there's the tokens made at school with a teacher's help -- a pains-taking message slanting across a page, "Mummy, I love vou." In our own childhood a mother's day gift was invariably a bouquet of wild flowers from the wood-lot to be cherished until the last one had succumbed. Through the years-all of this has changed and around us we hear the cry -- commercialism! It's true and it's sad but too often a fine thing does get out of hand. Our way of life has become so immured with mar RE UERLER Wk Of Facts and Fantasy by Reta M. Berrill materialism that the price-tag is of greater importance than the original idea. But it's not the fault of this generation. We've been working on it for a long time and with all phases of life. If sométhing costs a lot (moneywise) it must be better: Some years ago a-young couple found themselves very poor when Mother's Day arrived and this one was special as they'd recently become parents. The new father couldn't buy a gift for the child to be given to the new.mother, so he went to the woods--found a tiny maple seedling and planted it in their garden. The voung father didn't live to see his child grow up but the tree flourished and every Mother's Day saw his gift renewed. . We agree there's too much commercialism, too much advertising for too long a time. There's too much competing. But how do we stop water from flowing downhill? ' It had its beginning in the year 1908 at the insistence of one lady, Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia, who asked her church to hold a service in memory of all mothers on the anniversary of her own mother's "CANDIES IMR5-3548 PORT PERRY'S LAURA SECORD STORE CRYSTAL CLEAR ULTRA PURE WATER ION § XCHANGE |} 4) MOTHERS: Here's the health [ ] L} ¢ [|] L} ] } ADDRESS { CHOOSE HER FAVOURITE | ASSORTMENT BRUTONS 1- >-A: DRUGS > e y pure water ingredient for baby's formula delivered to your door. Children of all ages can express their feelings-- perhaps choosing a card is done after a session of self-analysis. "What does my mother mean to me?" _- And for mothers it's a time of similar feelings and re-evaluation. We all need to be dragged from our comfortable rut of complacency sometimes, and shown that, some things should never be taken for granted. We wish to salute all mothers, biological or adoptive. Our own mother, or someone else's mother whom we've loved or love. Even those who may not condone Mother's Day or shrug it off as sentimental trash. They'll still appreciate a special thought. If flowers are not their weak spot and candy is a no no, there can still be a dinner in a nice restaurant, and dvery mother of any age gets a thrill from dining out. The food's no better than she'd prepare at home, but it's such a joy to return home wearing the glow of being the honored guest and, to a tidy kitchen. Garth Linton and SLICED SIDE BACON.
