McDowell from Leaskdale occupied the pul- pit on Sunday morning at Burns Church in the absence of our own minister Rev. Black. We are pleased that Rev. Black is making favourable progress since his recent surgery. Christian Family Sunday is next Sunday at 11:30 a.m. with the Sunday School participating. Miss Chrissie Simpson will bring us the message. Plan to come out as a family and enjoy this hour of worship together. The Women's Missionary Society met at the home of Mrs. H. Ashton on Wed- nesday evening, May 2nd with eighteen ladies present. The meeting was called to order by the singing of the hymn, "Great God on You we Call." The scripture was read by Mrs. D. Ashton taken from Matthew 13: 1-9, 31 & 32, followed with a meditation 'Faith Seeds' as taken from the April issue of the Glad Tidings. Prayer by Mrs. Wm. Hopkins. The offering was received and dedicated. Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. A word of thanks was expressed to all who helped in any way with the Easter Thank -offering. The ladies were reminded of the Semi-annual to be held in Uxbridge in June. Mrs. Lindsay Death and Mrs. Clarence Bryant offered to work at Fairview this month. Following the business, Mrs. Russell Batten took charge of the study, continuing on our study of India. She spoke on the "New Horizons from Indian's Women." The sing- ing of "Just as I Am" brought our meeting to a close. The closing prayer by Mrs. Routley. Refreshments - were served by our hostess. Courtesies by Mrs. Wm. Gardner. The June meeting will be at the home of Mrs. Lindsay Death. Mrs. Nelson Ashton un- derwent surgery at the Oshawa General Hospital on Friday morning. Her many friends in the community wish her a very speedy recovery. Mr. and Mrs. D. Mrs. Clarence Bryant attended the Women's Inst- itute Convention at Waterloo last week. Several in the community sattended the Heber Down Tree Planting Ceremony at the Brooklin Memorial Arena, held last Sunday afternoon, in honour of the late Mr. Heber Down. The tree chosen was a 'Sunburst Locust," which Mr. Gordon Wick compared to the Qualities of Mr. Down, a man who served this area so well in his time. Boy Scout Paper Drive next Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Your papers may be left in the porch at the Community Centre. Plans are being made for the **Come Home to Ashburn Day" on Sunday, May 27th from 2 -- 5 p.m. A special church service is also being arranged. A lot of work is going into this effort. Ashburn a hamlet west of Myrtle, received its name from the potash industry which once flourished there. Grant Hunter and Grant Beacock. Last Wednesday several ladies from the village attended the noon luncheon and in the evening the interesting Ida Burns pro- gram all held in Port Perry United Church. Many also enjoyed the County Town Singers Thursday night and = No Reservations -- 1st come - Ist served soap. Ashburn shipped out large amounts of potash which was exported to points in Canada and the United States from Port Whitby. The original name of the community was Butler's Corners, named after an early settler. The community of Ash- burn was the home of the Pearson family, who were expert stone masons. It is likely that the old school house in Ashburn was built in the 1860s by the Pearsons. This building was converted to a community centre in 1967. The first brick building was the Wilson House hotel, which still stands on the northeast corner of the main corners of Ash burn. It dates from the mid-1860s. The Burns Presbyterian Church was a landmark in Ashburn for many years until it burned down in 1967. It has been replaced by a new church. Asburn was considered an important trading centre in the 1850s and 1860s, but with the coming of the automo: bile, it has remained a quiet hamlet since the turn of the century. Mr. and Mrs. Les Beacock were Saturday evening din- ner company with Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Beacock and sons, Port Perry. 4H girls provided a lovely Fashion Show before their exhibits and skits on Sat- urday at Uxbridge at their Achievement Day. The Achievement Day was held at Uxbridge. 4H Achievement Day was held on Saturday at the Trinity United Church Uxbridge. Receiving their County Honour awards are Jancie Williamson, Karen O'Reilly, Reta Langenburg, Kathy Stone and Dianne Barr. Bethesda-Reach WI annual meeting by Jean Jeffery The annual meeting of Bethesda - Reach W.I. was held at the home of Mrs. Morley Parish, April 25. President Mrs. Ted Croxall called the meeting to order. The Institute Ode was sung. The Mary Stewart Collect repeated in unison. Mrs. Croxall read the b eautiful poem, '"Make me grow, calm, serene and gentle". This was found at Black Creek village printed beautifully as it was many years ago. The minutes were read members rejoined by paying the annual membership fee. Pennies for friendship col- lected, correspondence read and forms for short courses filled in. The District Annual is to be held at Uptergrove Presbyterian Church, May 16, 1973. We are to display two garments made at Knack with Knits and will be looked after by Mrs. T. Carter. Visiting delegates Mrs. H. Boadway, Mrs. T. Carter, Mrs. D. Bigglestone. The Institute was asked to serve a lunch to guests of Mrs. C. Robb Sunday, May 13 at 1 or 1:30 p.m. It was moved and passed that we do so. A motion was passed that we give the Salvation Army twenty five dollars for the Wallace family of Marsh Hill who were recently burnt out. The annual meeting 1972-3 Secretary's report, financial report and Conveners of Standing Committees gave their reports. President Mrs. Croxall inspired all with a few remarks on "What the Institute Means to Me." The chairman of the nominating committee took the chair for election of Officers, Mrs. Brethour was appointed Secretary by Mrs. L. Pogue.
