At its May 15 meeting council was told that the building is in an unsafe condition and that repairs to HOWARD HALL PORT PERRY "I don't think it is necessary to save it. I'm not much of a history buff but | agree the Town Hall has more historic value than the Post Office. Why spend money on any of those old buildings?' the roof alone will cost about $27,500. Deputy reeve Phil Orde reported that he has done his own personal inspection of the 100 year old building at Queen and Lilla Streets, and found that the roof is not the only thing in need of repair. "I doubt if we could do everything for $50,000," es- timated the deputy reeve. It seemed to be the general feeling that Port Perry has all the meeting halls it needs pow. The STAR surveyed people on Queen Street last week and was told that high school graduation exercises were moved out of the building more than thirty years ago because the hall could not hold enough people. Gradua- tion exercises were apparently held in the United Church until the new high school was built with its modern auditorium. Clarence Carter of Port Perry said he can remember that the town hall was in need of repair 25 years ago. "It is too bad to tear it down, but it has been in bad shape for along time," commented Mr. Carter. However, he said if the town hall is torn down the old fire bell should be saved. At the council meeting Deputy reeve Orde was ready to tear the old building down now. "It looks to me like it isn't a sound proposition," commented Mr. Orde. "If we really needed it for some reason it "would be a different matter, but I don't think the taxpayers should be saddled with this one," Mr. Orde said. Councillor Reg Rose won- dered if Heritage Canada could be helpful. Heritage Canada is a new program, recently announced by the federal government, which * is" designed to help preserve the country's history. Reeve Robert Kenny cau- tioned against making a hasty decision. "I am sure it will be discussed once the "news is out," he said. "If the public can come up with a solution they should have the chance," he added. Councillor Grant McDer- mott agreed to postpone the decision reluctantly,* "So long as we don't shelve it for too long." The dozen people surveyed by the STAR were evenly divided in opinion. Six people were in favour of preserving it as a historic site. Six people said the building should be torn down. Karen' Diceman of Scar- borough said that a parking lot can be put anywhere, but historic buildings are hard to find. She said that people who visit the town every year would enjoy seeing the |Beare Motors Ltd. "It is not just Port Perry people who get the benefit," Mrs. Diceman pointed out. If Port Perry people are not the only ones who would benefit from keeping the hall as a historic site, should Port Perry people be the only ones to pay for its restora-, tion? Most people in the survey said no. Several suggested that the townspeople, per- haps led by the historical society, might organize fund raising events to pay for it. A few thought "The Govern- ment" should- pay. No one suggested the money come out of local property taxes. Most of the people we spoke to who want the building preserved are under 30 years of age. Oldtimers were willing to tear the Town Hall down in favour of something more useful. The STAR will welcome your opinions on the subject. The Rec Centre, still brightly decorated from Cartwright High School's annual 'At Home', and set with cafe style tables and (chairs, made an enjoyable room. Outfits, most of them made by the girls them- selves, ranged from formal to sportswear. The styles were summery despite the cold rain outside. Bright pastels and bold prints seemed to be the. favourite choices for the Ranger's fashions. Mrs. R. Turner and Mrs. B. Gunter, Ranger leaders, read the fashion comment- ary with an accompaniment of soft background music. For added enjoyment, the Ranger's sang a number of popular songs. The Fashion Show was followed by a very successful Bake Sale and a Penny Sale. $y ds anger's from going on with the show.
