LETTER TO THE EDITOR Conservation Authority proposal Editors Note . In last weeks paper a story appeared about attempts to establish a conservation authority in the Lake Scugog area. We wrote to the conser- vation authority branch of the Ministry of Natural Resources asking for the government view on this proposal. In the following leter Mr. A.D. Latornell, director of the branch, replies. Dear Mr. Arnold: Your letter of April 24, 1973 concerning the establish- ment of a Conservation Authority in the Scugog Region is acknowledged. As you are probably aware, the possible forma- tion of a Scugog Region Conservation Authority eli- cited considerable interest in the region in 1967 and 1968. As a result, and at the request of a number of local municipalities, the then Minister of Energy and Resources Management, the Honourable J.R. Simonett, insurance call... ROBERT McDOWELL UXBRIDGE 852-3010 REPRESENTING md The Mutual Life ASSURANCE COMPANY OF CANADA For convened a meeung ol the muncipalities involved for the purpose, of, voting on a resolution to establish a Conservation Authority. The vote took place on December 17, 1968, at which time the resolution was defeated by a vate of 9 to 7. As your letter indicates, renewed efforts are being made to bring the proposal for a Scugog Region Con- servation Authority to fruit- ion. Although the impetus for the new Authority is from the local municipalities, the Conservation Branch does support the movement and it is the hope of this Branch that an Authority in the Scugog Region will become a reality. In this regard staff from the Conservation Authorities Branch are available to meet with local councils, groups, or inter- ested individuals to discuss the subject. The proposals are the same as those of 1968 with the exception of Ennismore Township. At the request of that township, Ennismore has been added to the neighbouring Otonabee Region Conservation Authority. Yours sincerely, A.D. Katornell Wants Town Hall The Editor, Port Perry Star, Port Perry, Ontario. Dear Sir: In the future I hope that readers writing to the editor will sign their name. This will let us know whether the writer is a raving idiot or a sane person with an irrat- ional argument. For all we know, the writer may be the editor trying to stir up a controversy. In answer to "Pedestrian watching out for falling bricks" I would say it is stupid to expect a building that has stood for 100 years to start spewing bricks on our streets. I have survived the "dangerous walk past the old town hall" at least once a day for fifteen years without being aware of any hazard to my health. Also, "Pedestrian watch- ing out for falling bricks," the hall should be regarded as an asset. It could be used as a theatre for the Borelians, a hall for the Sea Cadets, a display center for local Arts and Crafts, or some other worthwhile or- ganization. Let us hope that the present council has enough sense to repair this useful building before it is too late to save it.
