PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, May 23rd, 1973 - 19 Congregations u for open air service The congregations of the Church of the Ascension, Port Perry and St. John's, Blackstock will combine for Rogation Service to be held on Sunday, May 27th at 11:00 a.m. The service will be held in the open air on the farm of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Christie, Manchester. This will re- place the regular services in the two churches and it is hoped that the worshippers will bring their own lawn chairs. If the weather is bad the service will be held in the Church of the Ascension, Port Perry. In earlier times a Rogation Service in England or Europe took the form of a procession of the "Clergy, Clerks, Choirs and Parish- ioners beating the "Bounds of the Parish," that is walking around the perim- eter of the Parish stopping at various water courses, fields, groves and orchards, and praying for God's blessing upon the various produce of the farms. The modern version of the service omits the peram- bulation but prayers are still made for abundant crops and various animals, seeds, and implements are blessed. In an age of technology and inter-dependance such a service reminds us of our ultimate dependancy upon God. At the conclusion of the service the worshippers will re-assemble in the Parish Hall of the Church of the Ascension for a Pot Luck Tuncheon. Each family will bring sufficient main course and dessert for itself and this will be placed on a 'common board." - Tea, coffee and Freshie will be provided by the Parish. Fourteen people were injured in 29 motor accidents which caused' $25,000 dam- age between May 14 + 20, according to Ontario Provin- cial Police from Whitby. The report covers all of southern Ontario County except those towns which have their own police departments. During the same week there were 2 break and enters, 5 thefts and 5 disturbances. Police stopped 5 impaired drivers and investigated 10 liquor offences. nite >] > >> ABILITY (March of Dimes) will hold a one night © BLITZ | on k: MONDAY JUNE 4TH : { Residents of Port Perry and area are 0" urged to leave their porch lights on and support this Blitz for the | REHABILITATION FOUNDATION : FOR THE DISABLED -- THE FUND We have moved to... 94 WATER STREET - PORT PERRY (Next to Scanlon XL Station) Brignall's -- 985-3322 New Liberal slogan Save us from Davis" In the meantime members will be kept busy addressing envelopes for MP. Albert J. Roy, afreshman M.P.P. from Ottawa, was guest speaker at a meeting of Liberal party faithful in Manchester May 16. About 30 people attended the meeting. He promised that the new slogan buttons will soon be available here. "The demand has exceeded the supply, so I could not bring any tonight," he apologized." Mr. Roy said that the tories have been -able to remain in power in this province for the past thirty years because they gave the impression of a capable board of directors which ran the affairs of the province in a business like way and kept everyone pretty well satis- Region decision The Oshawa Times has reported that Ontario Min- ister of Inter Governmental Affairs has told it that he has committed himself to mak- ing an announcement regar- ding regional government in this area by next Monday. Begining with the first charges of conflict of interest and carrying the delighted audience through the Fid- inham affair right up to the current hydro building con- troversy Mr. Roy outlined examples of what he re- ferred to as governmental incompetence. His frequent sarcastic verbal swipes at various government mem- bers drew the expected laughter from his fellow party supporters. NIXON SHOULD STAY Mr. Roy did not seem too impressed with his own party's representation in the house either. "There was a time when 1 thought "Bob Nixon should not continue as leader," he said, 'but now - when you look at the alternatives - we have a problem. We don't exactly have a line up of stars," he commented. Mr. Roy said that he would, "probably not," be a candidate for the leadership himself when the party meets next fall for a leadership convention. He said that unless a Liberal with real leadership poten- tial shows up Mr. Nixon should probably stay on as leader of the party.
