Town Hall (continued from front page) wanted to tear it down we could have done it two months ago," he said. Mr. Brock suggested that the building he opened a few days this summer for public tours '"'at their own risk' so people who express opinions about the hall's fate will know what they are talking about. And he suggested that his brief, which he called "The Port Perry Idea," be cir culated to the Chamber of Commerce and other interested parties as a dis- cussion paper. The brief envisions a Port Perry of the future which capitalizes on the Port Perry of the past. It sees the town as a unique shop- ping district with sufficient old country charm to draw tourists and other shoppers off the major highways which are planned to by pass the town. 'Thousands of European villages, by passed by major routes draw bus loads of people . . . because they are some- what distinctive," Mr. Brock points out. He sug- gests that the old Anglican Church, restored town hall, renovated Post Office and other buildings could set the pattern. Then, if the local businessmen could be per- suaded to redecorate the exterior of their buildings, the town would have a distinct charm which would give the "Port Hope Christ- mas atmosphere all year round." He said that Heritage Canada and the Ontario Heritage Foundation are just two groups which may be willing to contribute funds to restore the town hall and suggested that the new committee contact them for information. Representatives of the Navy League and local drama group attended the council meeting and ex- pressed interest in using the town hall if it is restored. Mr. Brock also suggested that it might serve as an office and tourist informa- tion centre for the Chamber >f Commerce. INVEST NOW!
