Readers express opinions Recalls parade 61 years ago , The Star, Port Perry, Ont. Sir: This is my first letter to your paper and I must admit I am quite interested in Port Perry L.O.L. (along with the County of South Ontario) holding the Orange Commemoration on July 7. Sixty one years ago, I marched in a parade from the fairgrounds through Cedar Creek behind the Banner of Blackstock L.O.L. 133 carrying the ropes along with the late Bro. Fred Hamilton. I believe the late Arthur Dowson rode the white horse as marshal and I well remember him delivering gasoline through Cartwright in a large tank drawn by a black team to the houses when the only cars were mostly Model T Fords and 490 Chevolets or a Gray Dort. I rememberthe Lodge from Kirkfield L.O.L. 116 with their top hats and frock coats getting the prize. Lodges came from a dis- tance by train while others by horse and buggy. I remember the Port Perry Orangemen met the contingent from Cartwright at the Scugog Island road corner and escorted us in. I remember many of the Orangemen of Port Perry long gone to their eternal reward -- Bros. Letcher, James Lucas, Wm. Cook, Frank Sheppard, Art Prent- tice, Smallman, Switzer, Percy Hooey, Bert McGre- gor, Wm. Ettey, Ges. Morrish, Dr. McMaster, etc. I marched in Belfast in 1926 in a parade that lasted for hours out to Finaghy Field through part of a city that were both friendly and hostile. To celebrate the first time I marched in Port Perry I am going to honor the host lodge by marching with them and with me will be one of man's best friends -- a large and beautiful part German Shepherd-Husky attired in regalis. I could go on and write ~much more. I have been the local correspondent for the Lindsay Post for nearly 35 years. I know many people in Port Perry, some of them relatives or old neighbours and friends from Cartwright who retired there. I think you are going to see a parade that will open the eyes of the public in a display of loyalty, patrio- tism, etc. that only such fine organizations as the Legion and Fraternal Lodges put on and if Torontd sends down some of their fine accordian and flute bands that will top it off. Byron Hyland Suggest removing booth . June 15, 1973 To Editor, Port Perry Star, Dear Sirs: Please spare me a mo- ment from your busy schedule and allow me a small corner in your most interesting "Weekly Paper." At a time when there is so much controversy about 'Old Buildings" to save, or not save, may I ask what about our Palmer Park, and "Puppies Booth,"? Is it fair to our restaurant owners and business men who pay taxes year around, and have to comply with health conditions, ete, to have some one take over for the tourist trade, and not have proper water supply and sanitary facilities. ° I say, remove the booth and let us have a clean park, free from the smell of grease etc. and where one may sit and enjoy a beauty spot at the waterfront as I'm sure it was intended to be. Thanking you, Sincerely, Dorothy Pascoe Port Perry, Ontario Announce playground programme As summer is approach- ing, I would like to notify all parents and children of the community that a Summer Playground Programme will be in operation once again this summer.
