¢ A aa SRE EMBERS Grant MacDonald retiring "as High School principal Grant C. MacDonald ends his thirty eight year teach- ing career Saturday. At 8:30 p.m. Saturday, June 23 friends, collegues and former students of the popular Port Perry High School principal will gather in the auditorium for a reception in honour of Mr. MacDonald. Grant MacDonald has lived in Ontario County for more years then he cares to admit. Born on a farm in Brock Township he attended a rural schoolhouse until he was 14. "I had no idea of going to University in those days,"" he remembers. Nevertheless he did get to a University. When he graduated with a degree for business administration and commerce in 1932 the country was in the midst of the depression. "I took a job in business." Although he had not started out with the idea of becoming a teacher he ac- cepted a job teaching at Sunderland Public School in 1935 and has been at it ever since. He came to Port Perry as a Physical Education and Mathematics teacher in 1946. Mr. MacDonald was made principal ten years later. "In those days (1946) we just had the old building. One half was used for the high school and the other half for the elementary school." The retiring principal does not remember teach- ing as a particularly excit- ing career, but he says what excitement there is come from pupil contact in the class room. Nothing noteworthy happens in ad- ministration, he says. Al- though he welcomes the improvements that have been made in teaching recently Mr. MacDonald hopes teachers never lose sight of the fact that the most effect teaching aid is still direct contact between teacher and pupil. The quality of his ability as a teacher can, perhaps, P On Tuesday evening we look forward to a relgious service. The churches take turns and the second Tues- day is the United Church -- but on the 12th of this month we learned (to our sorrow) that Rev. Reeves and fam- ily are leaving Port Perry this month so he had to be in Prince Albert that even- ing. Nevertheless he took time in the afternoon to call and acquaint us with the reason we were to be de- prived of our service. Rev. Reeves has been so kind on his frequent visits to the Home (always leaving us with a smile, a treat and a joke), that his cheery presence will 'be greatly missed. We wish Rev. Reeves, Mrs. Reeves and family a very happy and contented so-journ in Jarvis. There were no admissions and no discharges this week. On Thursday a good number played Bingo. Mr. and Mrs. Peters, Mrs. DeYonge, Mrs. Osterloo and Mrs.. McNenly helped with the game and we thank them one and all. The win- ners were Mrs. Clark, Mr. Preston, Mr. Abbott, Truckle, Mrs. Marlow, Mr. Brown, Mr. Hamilton and Mr. Snowden. Glen Hood spent the weekend on Scugog Island. Mrs Lloyd was at her home for the weekend. John Doupe spent the weekend with his family. Mrs. Mec- Farlane whose. birthday is June 18th celebrated by spending Sunday with her family. His only child, Esther, is now a teacher in Oshawa. "You have to enjoy the people 'you are working with because you are working with many, many people every day," he says of teaching. He gets plegsure from thinking of the people he has taught who are now his friends and associates. After next week Grant MacDonald intends to just do his own thing. He enjoys sharing in community life and intends to get involved just wherever and whenever he feels like it.
