1 10 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, June 27th, 1973 PR to IR Slr. 2 li A number of times during the past two weeks area residents may have seen a helicopter flying overhead and seemingly landing nearby. On Thursday of last week this same "chopper" landed at the lakefront at Port Perry and proceeded making arrangements for a spectacle that attracted many local people. Take-One, a film com- pany from Toronto were preparing to film a portion of a commercial for the Labatts Breweries. The all familiar balloon which any avid TV fan has seen in the Labatts commercials was spread out on the lakefront and readied for a flight across Lake Scugog. This particular flight has been attempted on three occasions with the two pre- vious failing because of poor weather conditions. The 5 or 6 seconds of the commercial that will involve the shots over Lake Scugog have therefore be- come very costly. Balloon flights are nor- mally done in early morn- ing or at dusk because the wind dies down enough at thie time to make a free flight possible. So, Thursday evening saw a crew of about 20, cameras, helicopter and balloon flyers converge upon Port Perry at a loca- tion near the ball diamond to prepare for the flight. When the winds died, the balloon was unpacked and the chore or wiring it to the basket and getting it read- ied begins. In the basket on this particular flight were three propane tanks, which are used to heat the air in the ballon to keep it aloft. Also in the basket were life-preservers, - because once in the air there is no telling where it might come down. Heating air Inflating this huge balloon is accomplished by 8 or 10 persons flaping the open end of the balloon so it begins to fill with air. When enough air is in the balloon, the propane torches are turned on and hot air is rushed into the balloon, which immediately begins rise and take shape. The whole proceedure of inflat- ing the balloon takes only about five minutes, and from that point on the flight is about to begin. After contacting the hel- icopter, which is already in flight, the signal to let the balloon go is given and the balloon starts its ascent into the air. The helicopter with specially fitted camera, cir- cles the balloon while the cameraman films it drifting above the lake. . Up up and across Lake Scugog by balloon
