Port Perry canoeists win Wasaga race Rudy Jamner and George Ausman of Port Perry canoed 40 miles down the Nottawasaga Conservation Authority. Helen Jamner# Rudy's wife, teamed up with Beverly Gill of Peterbo- rough to finish '» a second behind the fastest women's team and take the second place trophy. Mrs. Jamner and her partner completed the 20 mile women's course in 2 hours and 20 minutes. Jamner and Ausman have won the residents prize in the Canoe the Nonquon race for the past two years In a row. The Nottawasaga river is much wider than the Non- quon and has a number of tricky portages. "It is the first time I have canoed in pouring rain for five hours straight,"" Mr. Jamner commented. ) Two years ago Rudy Jamner knew almost nothing about canoes. "I'd been in a canoe before," he says, 'but I had never really paddled." When he saw the Canoe the Nonquon race mentioned in the Port Perry Star he suggested to neighbour George Ausman that they "enter," just for Valley the heck of it." The two men got a canoe, practiced for about half an hour, and won the residents prize. This year they won it again. The couple now practice about 6 hours a week, and plan to enter a number of races this season. When the STAR visited the Jamners in their modern Port Perry Bunga- low Helen was attending to housework in a bikini and looking at least 10 years younger than her 34 years. Canoing? It sure beats ex- ercising with Ed Allen, she agreed. On July 7, Rudy and Helen are off to Huntsville to compete a couple's race over Mary Lake from Huntsville to Port Sydney. Mr. Dress-Up poses backstage before .his per- formance at Port Perry High School on Tuesday, June 19th. He is sitting on top of his famous "Tickle Trunk." "Mr. Dress-Up" entertains children and parents The show was too late for Casey and Finnigan to attend, but children's T.V. personality "Mr. Dress-Up" staged a splendid one man performance. A good crowd of young- sters and their parents filled the Port Perry High School Auditorium on Tues- day, June 19 as Mr. Dress- Up entertained them. His most important stage prop was his "Tickle Trunk" which was an infinite source of children's delights. Attired in a pirate's hat and cape, Captain Dress-Up and his audience crew pad- dled to a desert island atop the Tickle Trunk. The small voyage ended in a confrontation with a ferocious chair which punctured the crew's balloon paddle. Mr. Dress-Up then changed into a less danger- ous clown costume and entertained the crowd by juggling and balloon break- ing. But the hapy spirit of the children was best noticed in Mr. Dress-Up's closing act. Together, with the accom- paniment of his banjo, Mr. Dress-Up and his captive audience sang several verses of "If you're happy 1 and you know it! Thank you Mr. Dress-Up for all those smiles.
