He chatted about his 38 year career as a teacher - principal. Mrs. Brock Sproule who taught the principal when he was a child remembered him as a good student. Although a number of for- mer students and teachers recalled that Mr. MacDon- ald had a firmness of con- viction which appeared to border at times on stub- borness one former student pointed out that he would not have finished schopl at all hd it not been for the principal's combination of firmness and compassion. The tributes drew a brief display of emotion from Mr. Macdonald. SCHOLARSHIP FUND The principal expressed pleasure over the fact that a number of people who are concerned about the school had donated a total of $1800 to being a Grant C. Mac- Donald Scholarship Fund. The money will be invested along with other donations to the fund. Interest from the investment will be used to provide an annual "scholarship to a student at Port Perry High School. The meeting was promised that the final total donated to the fund, and criteria for awarding the scholarship will soon be announced publicly. Student council president Penny Dowson presented the principal with a painting of himself in oil. The paint- ing will hang in the school. When the speeches and presentations ended most of the audience stayed for an informal refreshment hour in the school cafeteria. And a good time, as we say in the newspaper business was * had by all. The Ontario County Board of Education has granted permission for a group of 188 parents and students from Port Perry High School to visit Britain next March. Last week's Port Perry Star mentioned the fact that the tour had been planned and that the organ- izer of the tour Mr. Paul Arculus was seeking board approval. That approval has been granted by Mr. Howard. Hempstead, the Area Superintendent for the Ontario County Board of Education. "In granting approval for the trip, the admin- istration has been most generous and indeed have expressed considerable trust and confidence in the teachers, parents and stu- dents of Port Perry High School," Mr. Arculus com- mented. "This particular situation sets a precedent for our board since no such tour has been undertaken during school time," Mr. Arculus added. The 17-day tour will leave Toronto on the evening of March 8, 1974 and land in Prestwick, Scotland and travel throughout Britain, returning to Toronto on the evening of March 25, 1974. The specific academic areas of British Geography, Literature and History will be the focal points of the visits to castles, cathedrals, houses and schools. The students will 'have a variety of ex- periences planned for them including a visit to a soccer game in London, the chance to climb Kinder Scout, one of the peaks on the York- shire moors and visits to the homes of authors such as the Brontes, the writers of "Jane Eyre" and '"'Wuther- ing Heights." An archeolo- gical dig on the Roman Wall has been planned along with walking tours of the London of Charles Dickens. Considerable time and effort has been spent on planning the tour around the work covered in the. students' high school studies and their own interests.
