LPR Ye. PER + 2 any ee S00 Sn odd = 16 -- PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, July 18th, 1973 Campers won't have to hide their booze The days when people will have to hide behind trees and wrap their bottles in towels for a nip of their favorite liquid refreshment while on a picnic will soon be gone. One benefit of regional government will be the sale of "'spirituous, fermented or intoxicating liquors" within regional parks and the sub- sequent right for eligible ON TARGET EVERY TIME people to partake of such liquors. The Durham regional council has been given su- pervisory powers to permit the sale of spirits in all regional parks from year to year or for any period not exceeding 10 years. Liquor sales must abide by the rules and regulations of the Liquor Licence Act, but the regional council can also establish its own addi- tional regulations. If the regional council moves quickly, it may just be able to establish bars and beer stands in regional parks before the hot sum- mer days of 1974. ATTENTION FARMERS!! WHY PAY MORE? The Hobo Tea will be mentioned again in the Fall as very few members ven- tured out. Summer seems to be a very busy time. The girls thought it would be nice to have an outing of some kind, so Aileen VanCamp will try to organ- ize a trip to the O'Keefe Centre. Kathleen Dorrell will help decide which show to see and arrange trans- portation. For the Husband's Ban- quet at the Rock Haven, it was decided that we try to arange it for either Novem- ber 3 or November 10. Roll Call was "What you did before you were married." After Roll Call, lunch was served and the meeting closed. The annual McLaughlin Picnic was held on Sunday in Cartwright Community Park at Caesarea. A fine crowd from quite a number . of out-of-town locations as well as our own area at- tended this family gather- ing. Heather, Pam and Penny Read from Brampton conducted a fine pro- gramme of games and sports. Swimming and visit- ing were enjoyed both be- fore and after the bountiful picnic supper. The Coming Werry Picnic Our village plays host to the Werry Centennial Picnic this Saturday and Sunday. Several local families are busy with preparations for this unique occasion. Have you heard of any other family celebrating one hun- dred years of holding family picnics? Although the first picnic was held in Tyrone in 1873, the second in 1874 was held at the home of Thomas Werry, just south of Black- stock, on the century farm now owned by his great- grandson, Neil Werry. Other farms in Cartwright which have hosted this pic- nic are the Philip farm, "The Willows," the T.A. Wright farm, "Lieu Villa" (now owned by his great- grandson, Glenn Larmer) and the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Wright. Mrs. Wright (Louise) re- calls this 1927 picnic and said they held the Whitfield Picnic the same year too when everything was ready for a picnic! Blackstock Recreation Centre and Park have been the home location of this annual family gathering 'since 1965. This year rela- tives travelling from Mon- treal, Calgary, Sudbury, and from points in the United States as far away as Towa will bring peak attendance to over 500. Events include a Saturday noon buffet luncheon, a beef barbecue, dance and a Sun- day morning church service featuring a men's choir and quartette. So welcome, Werry visi- tors, hope your stay here is a pleasant one! Sunday was the first of the combined services for the United and Anglican Churches during the sum- .mer. On July 22 and 29, church will be at 10:00 a.m. at the United with Rev. V.M. Parsons and on August 12, 19 and 26 service will be at 11 a.m. at the Anglican Church with Rev. R.C. Rose. Parsons preached an ex- cellent sermon on 'The Pro- digal Son Who Stayed Home." Gail Malcolm sang a lovely solo. Vacation School will be held at the United Church C.E.
