Saturday the Judo Club will demonstrate its art in Palmer Park and the reg- gatta will take place at the waterfront. Special attrac- tion of the reggatta this year will be a performance by Roly's Birdmen, profes- sional stunt men who take off on water skis with wing like kites strapped to their backs and end up sailing through the air behind a boat. the birdmen will give a three hour demonstration beginning at 2 p.m. The horse rodeo is sche- duled for Sunday. Everyone will want to get their own western hat and try their luck in a quick draw competition. he Ontario's forest industry pays directly and indirectly approximately $300 million annually in municipal, pro- vincial and federal taxes, including over $20 million directly to the provincial government in various charges. Chamber hopes to have a mini-coral with a- machine that times your draw. You holster areal six gun. When a red light goes on you draw sound of and shoot. The your gun stops the clock and, if you are fast enough, you get a certificate identi- fying you as a quick draw artist. The CROWDS LINE THE QUEEN STREET MALL during a previous year. Toronto's much publicized Yonge St. Mall has nothing-on Port Perry as this photo from our mall of a few years ago shows. Chamber of Commerce is Sponsoring this second annual western weekend to promote the town despite the fact that some members lost a little money on the promotion last year. C of C Vice president Richard Drew expressed the opinion that last year's crowd was hav- ing so much fun many of the people forgot to shop. The real reason for the festival is to attract large numbers of out of town folk who may be making their first visit to Port Perry. If they enjoy the local hospital ity they will, hopefully, re- turn often and shop. To this end the Chamber _ is 'spending money to advertise the event on radio stations in Oshawa and Whitby. Newscoverage has been arranged in some of the daily newspapers, radio and T.V. stations around southern Ontario. It is hoped that Port Perry area residents will not only take full advantage of this oppotunity to enjoy a weekend long main street mall celebration, but that they will show the friendly nature of our area to our out of town guests. In the past year seven gravel pits have been li- cenced by Queens Park on the advice of Reach council which was acting under the unofficial amendments. On Sept. 4, 1972 licences were issued to Wm. Goodal of Commercial Sand and Gravel, Unionville for a pit at part lot 1, concession 5 and to Harnder & King Construction Ltd., Cobourg, for a pit at lots 1 and 2, concession 4, and to Griffen and Sellers of Unionville for a pit at lot 4, concession 4. On October 3, 1972, R. Bruce Holtby of Port Perry got a licence to take gravel from lot 11, concession 1. On December 5, 1972 James Sabiston Ltd. of Unionville was licenced as a gravel pit at part lots 3 & 4 concession 12. Beatty Haulage Ltd. of Oshawa got its licence for part lot 6, concession 3 on April 17, 1973. The most recent licences to Lee Sand & Gravel and Lloyd John Kydd have already been reported to the STAR. In some cases residents have had objections to these licences being granted. In other cases no chance was given to object simply because people did not know about the applications until they were approved and reported in the paper. Amendments to zoning by-laws and official plans must be approved by Queens Park before they become official, so the government can make sure everyone has a chance to voice their objections. The amendment is probably legal while council is wait- ing for the hearing under the theory that the hearings do not take long to set up anyway and that not much damage can be done in the meantime. However in this case Queens Park has taken well over two years and in the meantime seven gravel pits have opened. Two attempts have been made to turn an old gravel pit into a gar- bage dump. All without giving local residents any . legal oppor- tunity to object. The township has faced similar delays with its official plan. A public meet- ing to discuss that will be held tomorrow. Tomorrow's official plan meeting and the August 20 zoning meeting promise to be heated affairs. Announcement K.
