\ Now that preliminary voters lists have been posted for the October 1 regional election, the regional "supermayor" has established an office at Durham College and serious candidates have already declared the office they are running for, it might be time to take a look at the whole regional election procedure. Port Perry will be amalgamated with Scugog, Reach and Cartwright on January 1, to form the new Township of Scugog. Our amalgamated township will be run by seven people, who will be elected on October 1 and serve from January, 1974 until December 1976, a three year term. All ten nomin- ators must be able to vote for the cndidate they nom- inate. This means that people running for ward seats will have to be nominated by people in their ward. Port Perry, Reach, Scugog and Cartwright will each form one ward. Of the seven people on our council, two will represent this area on regional council. Regional represen- tatives will be the mayor and the regional councillor at large. Candidates for mayor are Jerry Jackman of Port Perry and Lawrence Malcolm of Blackstock. Candidates for regional councillor at large are Art Catton and probably Armour McMillan, both of Reach Township. The other five local councillors will not go to county council. One will be elected, "'at large," or from all wards and one will be elected from each ward. Rev. Reg Rose of Port Perry's Anglican Church is expected to run for the "at - Minor changes in election procedures "" large," seat. High School teacher Georgia Brendon will run in the Port Perry Ward. No other candidates have made up their minds yet. Enumeration notices were sent by mail to-all people on the voters list last week. If you did not get a notice you have until August 30 to contact your municipal office and find out how to get on the list. School board elections will be held on the same day, and in much the same way as town council elections. A series of four safety cartoons were run in several dozen weekly news- papers across Ontario recently. There were only five youngsters from Ontario County among the 98 winners which have been announced so far. Last Tuesday evening our local recreation centre once again provided space for a social function. This time a = presentation party for a village young man Mr. . After majority of interes: 'ted folk had-assembled Mrs. Roy 'Mildred' Hope acted as mistress of ceremonies as well as she and Mrs. Thos. Midgley conducted contests after which Mrs. E. Martyn supervised a mus- ical program. The hour arrived when the bride-to-be and prospective groom were requested to be seated on two appropriately decorated chairs. A neighbour Mr. T. Midgley presented (on behalf of this area) a minia- ture green tree laden with that "green paper stuff" -- totaling over one hundred dollars. © Gordon and Anne each expressed their thank you in an appreciat- ive manner. The serving of lunch ended another party. Mr. and Mrs. de Groot and two of her family from Holland have enjoyed over a month with her brother and wife Mr. Mrs. N. Rensink and family. During this time the Rensinks have been gaily entertaining their relatives to highlights of Ontario. Miss Karin De Groot plans remaining here to attend school for at least a year. Three young men of eur village have been holiday- ing at their respective homes namely Mrs. Jas. Martyn from near Ottawa. Mrs. Ken Brown from _ Alaska and his brother Larry from Ottawa. Mr. and Mrs. L. Beacock _ enjoyed being Sunday dinner company with their son and wife Mr. and Mrs. Grant Beacock of Shirley Road. Mr. and Mrs. M. K. Luke, Stoney Creek called for his mother Mrs. C. Luke and aunt Mrs. EK. McKerian and all travelled to the Luke cottage for a week at Port Dover for a pleasant holi- day. Mr. and Mrs. E. Wilcox, Edmonton, Alta., visited with Mr. and Mrs. B. Snelgrove. Mrs. and Mrs. Vernon Graham and family of Winnipeg are holidaying with his mother Mrs. Mabel Graham. Then last Friday Mrs. Graham and her western company accom- panied by Mr. and Mrs. Hargrave, Willowdale atten- ded the colorful North York Hospital Graduation Exercises when Mrs. Graham's grand-daughter Miss Sharon Hargrave graduated among the many.
