The more she draws - the better she gets. Last year Ms. Taylor took a number of her drawing, had them reproduced as notes, paid three hundred dollars for a booth at the Toronto exhibition and was lucky. "I broke even," she says. This year she did a little better. After moving to a 100 acre farm near Blackstock she took boxes of her notes to the Blackstock fair and made six dollars. She did even better the following week at Port Perry fair. Success. The fact is her drawings are excellent and deserve a much larger audience than they are getting. . It has long been a pet peeve of your reviewer that financial success in the unprofitable world of Cana- dian art always seems to go to people who do a better job of handling their own public relations than they do of producing worthwhile works of art. Mr. Taylor disagrees with that view. If the stuff doesn't sell, she says, it must need improving. Good work will appeal to the public. Well, maybe. But for my money the pencil and char- . coal drawings of animals produced by the 23 year old Blackstock woman's liber- ationist are a lot more valuable than a six, dollar profit from a local fair would indicate. Ms. Taylor has 24 drawing reproductions on the market at present. Ten of them are of horses. "I love horses," she says, "They are majestic." The artist says she suf- fered from "a terrible lack of confidence," when she started, but that would not be noticeable unless you compared those first draw- ings of a year ago with her latest works. The finished products have improved only slightly in a year, but the artist has become more daring in both subject matter and technique. If she continues to draw and improve Canada will some day have another first rate artist. Tasse Taylor did not take art lessons. 'Teachers mold you," she says, "you have to battle it out by yourself and develop your own style." Ms. Taylor used to be dental nurse in Toronto. "I found the 8 to 6shours didn't leave me time for anything else," she says. 'This (drawing) isn't work to me. I enjoy it so much." If she enjoys drawing her animals as much as I enjoyed examining them Tasse Taylor must be having a lot of fun. Most popular work. This drawing outsells all of the artists other works.
