"Election takes on a new dimension ® Anew age ® A new look Advertisement Lonny Mark, a native of Port Perry, is seeking to be elected as public school trustee for the first time. Lonny believes he has a contribution to make to the people of the New Township of Scugog. His age, educa- tion and experience dictate that he is able to objectively evaluate from the admin- istrative aspect, as well as through the eyes of those most directly involved -- students. He is 'young enough to take a chance" with many of the new and proven theories in educa- tion, but at the same time "old enough" to know the value of your dollar and that many of the established tra- ditions, ideas, ideals and methodologies of schooling must be kept in tact or carefully modified in order to prevent the education system becoming abstracted to the point of confusion and total obscurity. This enterprising young man is interested in ful- filling each and every duty of the trustee's role. This includes being interested in what is 'best for you as a tax-payer; you as a parent; you as a student. He is not solely concerned with the tax-payers, nor parents, nor students, nor teachers, but rather an equalized integra- tion of all four. This is so tu ensure the utmost in excel- lence of education at a minimal cost. Improved community -- school relations; study and reconsideration of budget allocations; excellence in education at a minimal cost: NEED MUSIC? 985-3089 (after 6p.m.) and ask for Peter Advertisement ® A new man and everything that con- cerns you as a resident of this region head his list of educational priorities. Improved School -Commun- ity Relations: The public must be kept up to date on school board concerns, and as an employ- ee of the people, it is the school trustee's duty to en- sure that this is.done. Mr. Mark believes he can ac- complish this through the use of newsletters and a regular regional office -- rotated throughout the region -- where all residents of the region would be wel- come to bring their pro- blems, complaints and sug- gestions which would be listened to and acted upon. Thus, making the school trustee not only available but more importantly ac- cessible to the public. Wider and shared use of school facilities is also in- . volved in the improvement of school community rela- tions, and should be promo- ted. Residents should be encouraged to use the school's facilities for social meetings, recreation, clubs, etc. Nominal cost for such use would aid greatly at this time of limited budgets. Study and Reconsideration of Budget Allocation: In this area it is necessary that all school depart- ments are receiving ade- quate funds to operate at what the budget imparts to be an optimum. No depart- ments or groups of students should be favoured. We should promote gradual use of new and proven educat- ional research and techn- ology within the budget. Promotion of community use of schools at nominal cost and in such a fashion as not to impede the school's major function of educating our youth would aid in helping the schools to pay for themselves and also strengthen the bond between the school and its commuri- ity. Such things as an inter- school library and equipment loan system would reduce the cost of duplication of expensive books and equip- ment and at the same time increase the quantity and quality of such items avail- able for use at your school. Excellence in Education at a Minimal Cost: Through improved school-community relations and study and reconsid- eration of budget allocation we shall be able to give our youth the best possible education while still keeping costs minimal. This will be accomplished by you and your trustee working in a co-operative environment and listening to and acting toward what you as a resi- dent tax-payer, parent, stu- dent, teacher of this region desire. Everything That Concerns You: It is imperative that the trustee remembers at all times that he is an employee of the public and responsible to the public. Therefore, it is necessary for him to be concerned with everything that concerns you. He must listen to and act for and with you. The new school trustees have a difficult job ahead of them and they must be prepared to fight for what is best for the New Township of Scugog, (Cartwright, Port Perry, Reach and Scugog), as a unit. They must not succumb to the wants of the other areas of the region if such desires will not be beneficial to our own area. It is also necessary that they be prepared to work for what is best for -our region when dealing with groups and persons outside our region. It is imperative that we elect trustees who will be strong enough to satisfy our needs as tax-payers, parents, students, teachers and most importantly as residents of the New Town- ship of Scugog. ~e.l PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Sept. 12th, 1973 -- 19 Seagrave and area news ..This community was sad- dened but not surprised to learn on Monday that Mr. Bert Dowson had passed away in Lindsay Hospital.
