On September 14, I was invited to attend Law School at the University of Ottawa. This was a long desired but unforeseen opportunity, which I don't feel I can pass by. There were two main reasons why I was running for the Board of Education. One, I sincerely feel that I had some fresh viewpoints which should be ex- pressed on the Board. Two, I believe that I could have balanced the Board by better representing the feeling of young people. SOME OF THE MAIN ISSUES AS I SEE THEM ARE:- YOUR SCHOOL TRUSTEE should be as near as your telephone: To many people "disappear" when they are elected. If you elect LONNY MARK, he will be available and accessible at anytime to discuss any problem or concern you have. Telephone 985-2304. SCHOOL -COMMUNITY RELATIONS should be solid: It should be easy and convenient for parents to visit their child's school. Parents should feel welcome. Not only parents, but all member of the community should feel welcome not only to enter the school, but also to use the facilities. Too often there is an invisible barrier between the school and the community. This should be overcome. OUR TAX DOLLARS have to be allocated wisely: | deserve the best. We have to be sure that our money is being spent on the things that will do our students the most good. We pay a lot of money for our schools, and we SCHOOL COSTS have to be kept under control: .The Provincial ceiling on education spending are a good thing. They keep the annual rate of increase in school board budgets down to reasonable levels. This policy deserves strong support. But care must be taken not to hurt the quality of education. WE CAN'T FORGET the basics in our schools: Today's students have more varied educational programmes than ever before, and this is good. But we can't overlook the basic subjects. In the elementary schools, reading, writing and arithmetic (the 3 R's) should get first priority. And in high school, the traditional backbone subjects shouldn't be overlooked. It is my sincerest wish that one of the candidates will adopt and impliment my platform. If one of the elected trustees does adopt my platform, I'll be around both to offer help and ensure its implimentation. My education and ex- perience have I feel qualified me for the position of school trustee and even though I am disappointedly obliged to withdraw, I am still interested and offer any assistance I may be, both to the school trustees and the members of this new community. If I can help anyone with anything related to the school board or education in general, please don't hesitate to call me. I am disappointed that I will not have the chance to represent you on the school board at this time, but I wish you to consider this as a postponement.
