'UN organization has much to boast about . . . Brief History of Odd Fellow's & Rebekah United Nations Pilgrimage for Youth Approximately 25 years ago our Sovereign Grand Master and the Secretary General of the U.N. met and as a result hundreds of young people from accross North America have had the privilege of touring the United Nations. This is not an ordinary tour as the students go to assembly rooms, sit in the General Assembly, the Security Council and other Council Rooms where the general public are excluded. To qualify for a certificate or pin as a U.N. Pilgrimage Student, they must attend at least thirteen seminars or lectures in the United Nations. Lectures are given by Delegates from various countries, or a secretariat, THE WINTER SLEEP CAN BEA NIGHTMARE FOR YOUR LAWN. But not if we have anything to say about it. When you buy fuel oil what you really should be getting is assured heat. That means oil delivery on time all of the time. Top-notch attention to 'your furnace to insure that it works efficiently all during the heating season. It means annual clean-out and service. It also means availability of other home comfort equipment such as air conditioners, humidifiers and electronic air clean- ers, to name a few. And it means an effective insur- ance policy against expensive furnace breakdown and such as the Hygrade Golden Service Warranty available at a small premium, repair . . . For a total of six weeks the Odd Fellows and Rebekah Pilgrimage enter- tain approximately 200 stu- dents each week. Since its inception over Seven Million Dollars has been spent by Odd Fellows and Rebekahs ion | the U.N. Pilgrimage for youth. What of the future? This past year as Grand Master I expressed my hopes that in the future we could establish a fund with an extra con- tribution from each lodge. This fund would underwrite the expenses of students from Europe, Asia, Africa or South America. Why spend all this money? In the youth of today lies our hope for to-morrow. If we give our youth the world over a better understanding -of world problems, a more tolerant view of each other we can build a better world for to-morrow. A world of Peace and Love. We have cast Bread upon the Waters. We have Faith that in the years ahead others will reap a glorious harvest. Glenn Wanamaker, Past Grand Master, Grand Lodge of Ontario. Janet on sightseeing tour in Ottawa On our way to New York by bus we had the oppor- tunity to tour one of the major cities we passed through. Our first stop was Ottawa where we visited the Parliament buildings, watched the changing of the guard and the Secretary of State spoke to us. A bus tour in the afternoon included points of interest such as the Rideau Canal, the R.C.M.P. buildings and the home of the Prime Minister. Next stop over was Montreal where we visited Place Ville Marie, Notre Dame Cathedral and Man and His World. en route to New York from Montreal through Vermont and Connecticut the scenery was just magnificent. Miles and miles of mountains, rivers and rolling pasture land. Before I visited New York City and the United Nations I often wondered "What do I really know about the United Nations?" Janet Watson reports on United Nations Pilgrimage place where people from every country gathered to talk about their individual problems. My impression was they weren't really doing much because you never heard much about the United Nations or how it affected Canada. With these ideas in my mind I left for New York City. Visits General Assembly The first section we visi- ted was the General Assembly. Of all the sec- tions we visited this was the most effective in my opinion. This is where all the delegates meet and there are seats for advisors, the press and the public as well. The Assemby is the main peace and security. This is the place where the "veto" power is put to use. Each member of the Security Council (there are 15). is represented at all times so it can be in readiness to meet at any time when peace is threatened. With the wars we've seen in the world it may seem the Security Council is doing very little but this is not true. They act as the neutral party in any war and it calls a cease-fire when actual hostilities deve- lop. Its effectivenss was 29 proven where the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (U.N.T.S.0.) deliberative organ ot the United Nations and has the right to discuss and make recommendations on all matters within the scope of the Charter. It is authorized to work fast in an emerg- ency. On ordinary matters only a majority is needed in the vote but on important questions a two-thirds ma- jority is required. To me it seemed the most efficient and vital section of the United Nations.
