How surprised but thrilled I was this morning when I received your paper from my brother in-law Robert Plum who lives in Toronto. He has been sending his paper on to me for some time. I was born and attended public school in Blackstock. When I left Blackstock I was working in the Standard Bank, after I went to Toron- to I left the bank and worked to cash office in Eatons for almost 5 years. I met Charlie on a blind date and we were married 2 years later. He was at the time an operator on C.N.R. stationed at Coalspur, Alta. I came as a bride to Coal- spur the end of September, 1923. Coalspur was a change to Toronto but I made friends and we were both happy. My father Edward Riches was a carpenter by trade and he built many homes around Blackstock including Town Hall, Armouries, the Jack Marlow, Samells, Montgomery now Mrs. W.W. VanCamp home, Charles Smith, the Smith Home near Burketon and Whitfield home in the country. These are some I can recall. He lived to be 97 years. The last few years he lived with Russell in Peterbo- rough. Clifford lives in Stroud near Barrie and Evelyn the youngest sister lives in Garson near Sudbury she lost her hus- band last April Charlie died 3 years ago the Mr. and Mrs. Wayland Drew have moved to Man- chester from Oshawa. The Blackstock High > School held its initiation dance on the weekend. One highlight of the evening was Hula Hoop contest won by David Ballingal. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Lane, Port Perry are happy to announce the birth of their son, Gary Edwards. A new brother for David. 10 YEARS AGO Thursday, October 3, 1963 On Sunday, Fire Chief Guy Raines and five of his men from the local fire department participated in a rescue exercise near Brooklin. Congratulations to Mr. Larry Davidson, Greenbank who won a silver medal for being Senior Boy Champion at the District Inter-school Track meet held in Uxbridge. Grade 3 of Scugog Centre School has been moved to Front school until Christmas. Port Perry Council passec a motion to move the pre. sent bus stop to the north side of Queen Street and west of Perry Street. Street. I know he too I do enjoy your paper and it is read from front to back especially the news from Blackstock, Prince Albert and Port Perry. You may not enjoy my letter too much but I was so pleased I just had to write you. Thanking you once more. Alberta Plum Ed's Note: Mrs. Plum is referring to a small item under "'50 Years Ago' printed September 19 which read as follows: Miss Alberta Richie, Toronto and formerly of Blackstock be- came the bride of Mr. Charles Plum, Prince Albert last week. Lonny Mark, . the Port Perry youth who told people he did not want any votes, picked up 143 of them any- way. Mr. Mark had recently graduated from the Univer- sity of Guelph. He came home to Port Perry after applying for admission to law school and, since he had not heard from the law school, decided to offer his services to the voters as a public school trustee. Nominations had no sooner closed then the law school contacted him that he had been accepted and should attend the University right away. He bought a large ad in PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, Oct. 3rd, 1973 -- 3 143 votes the STAR advising voters to support someone else, be- cause he would not be avail- able to serve. Despite his, don't vote form plea, 143 voters marked their ballots for Mark. HA.
