October 3rd. 1973 P. Hvidsten, Publisher, Port Perry Star, 235 Queen Street, Port Perry, Ontario. Dear Sir: As Clerk-Treasurer of the Village of Port Perry, I wish to reply in this capacity to an article in your paper of September 26th, 1973 headed "Nothing wrong with Federal aid." This article quotes Mr. Cafik as having called Village Council every week for three months to see how the application was coming. It should be noted that the Village Office has never received a call from Mr. Cafik in this regard and I personally have never spoken to Mr. Cafik in my life. Perhaps Mr. Cafik con- tacted an individual Council member, however the Council members have not indicated this to be the case. Mr. Cafik is quoted as saying the proper forms did not arrive in Ottawa until the deadline shad passed. Since the necessary. fornis were executed and mailed from my office on April 3rd, 1973 and the deadline for the project was May 31st, 1973, I somehow question the manner in which the appli- cation was handled or the efficiency of the Federal Postal System. NEED MUSIC? for a =. WEDDING call - 985-3089 (after 6 p.m.) and ask for Peter PLUMBING - . As you may know, one of the purposes of the L.LP. is to. create jobs for unem- ployed persons. When the Village contacted the Man Power Office in Oshawa it could not provide any skilled unemployed persons for the Village project from either the Oshawa Man Power Centre area or from other areas. * "Never received a call from Mr. Cafik" In summary 1 wish to advise that I personally phoned Mr. Cafik on Thurs- day, September 27th, 1973, however he was unavailable but would call me back later that day. Mr. Cafik's assist- ant returned that call and my comments on the article were relayed to him. He assured me Mr. Cafik would call me on Friday, J September 28th, 1973. This call has not been received. I trust this will explain the facts in the matter of the L.I.LP. grant in relation to Mr. Cafik's quote. Yours very truly, J.N. Brodie, Clerk-Treasurer. Right to vote a privilege October 3, 1973 The Editor, Port Perry Star, Port Perry, Ontario. Dear Sir, and The People of, Scugog: Previous to the elections in Scugog, for Scugog Council and Regional Council Representatives, one of the candidates and I were discussing voting and people's reasons for support- ing one candidate or another. There are many of course, but when I came to think of my own reasons, I found this: Someone had to be chosen by me to represent my thoughts and feelings re- garding issues, as I myself did not have the time, in my present way of life, to do so. On October 1st, 1973, I had my chance to vote for the representative of my choice. all of those I chose were not successful, but those who were not, were close -- very close. The votes are in, and the ballots counted. The turnout to vote was not a good one, and should have been. Many it seems, did not realize ithe far-reaching implications of choosing wisely, this First Scugog Council, and their representative .to the New Regional Council. LANE HEATING - - ELECTRIC - ! If this privilege was not exercised on Election Day by those who were eligible, they then will have no right to question what our newly elected representatives do in the next three years. Did the thought ever occur to any- -one that the government might one day find it feasi- ble to deduct points such as those deducted for Driver's License infractions, until the time came when a person no longer had the privilege to vote. Let's hope that in our Democratic way, something like this does not become necessary. Fifty percent is just a pass, in most cases. If the figures re the October 1st. vote that we have avilable to date, are any indication, we just made it with our fifty one decimal five percent vote in Scugog. Come on People, its you who have the choice in your Future. Sincerely, Pat Lane Nearly 7,000 miles of all-weather roads have been built in Ontario by the forest industry, to provide harvesting crews with ready access to the timber stands, and also for pro- tection against fire. Editor of Port Perry Star: Dear Sir, I wish it understood at the beginning of this letter that this is NOT an expression of "sour grapes' over an election result. When enter- ing an election, one always knows there is no sure way to victory. However, I do feel that I must make a public protest over the ru- mours and lies that have been deliberately spread concerning my husband. The rumour that Jerry was or is connected with the 'Mafia' is an utter and vicious lie. It was fabricated during the election a year ago, with no foundation and no proof by people who deliberately mislead those who will listen. During the week prior to this election we heard these rumours were rampant again. How can you cope with these underhanded movements? There is no way and the results are sure devastating and far reach- ing. Jerry is a partner in a leg- itimate and growing sewer and watermain business in Whitby. He is also.employed as a part-time salesman with two companies, one in Port Perry, one in Whitby. Neither he, our relatives or any friends have ever been or expect to be involved in any land deals past, present or future that would be in- fluenced by him holding any office. This campaign or any previous campaign was not backed by 'big money" or "mafia money" and, I might add, we have the bills to prove this if anyone would care to see them. Please ask yourselves what contribution has ever been made to the well-being of this town by anyone of the people known to have con- cocted these cruel and mal- icious stories? I'm sure the many and sincere friends we have are. well aware of how Jerry, (continued on page 6) GET THE JUMP ON WINTER ALUMINUM STORM eo Self Storing e Pre Hung ol" ALUMINUM STORM We a Odd Stocks © = 00 Each CEMENT MIXES 20 tb. bag $2.19 Py ZS) CAULKING GUN $q6° CAULKING COMPOUND a49c 1.
