py * ] 2 £ | «eo 3 Le py. - When John Ballard brought his bride Joy to settle in Port Perry 27 years ago he never dreamed that he would one day be wel- coming the entire commun- ity to an 'Open House" to officially open their new, modern building supplies and construction head- quarters. } The thought probably didn't even occur to him when he began a small wholesale lumber business on a three quarter acre site on Water Street two years later. But this week several hundred people will pull into the brand new paved parking lot, stride through the glass doors and stroll comfortably among the soft pastel colours of the new Ballard Lumber Co. Ltd. headquarters on Scugog just east of Water. Many of them will tour the spacious five acres of modern equipment and supplies that provides a living for Ballards 24 employees and decide once again that free enterprise is a pretty good thing after all. John and Joy Bhrd worked alone in their retail business when it first opened in 1948. Together they raised three girls and two boys in Port Perry, made a host of good friends and demonstrated that hard work still has its reward. In 1954 the business ex- panded to include retail lumber sales. A larger var- iety of building items were gradually added and even- tually Ballards began a con- struction branch. Six years ago John saw his son, Ralph, join the business. Altogether the business has grown from two employees to 24 from three quarters of an acre to 5 acres and from a showroom floor space of 100 ft. to 6,500 square feet. The official opening will be quiet and without fuss. But everyone is invited.
