Readers' opinion Support husbands' decision October 11, 1973 The Editor, ¢ Port Perry Star Co. Ltd. Port Perry, Ontario. Dear Sir: . Regarding the article written in the October 10th issue of the paper we the wives of the outside workers wish to speak out. We have remained silent since January of this year, through all heated discus- sions which your Mr. Arnold started by not reporting the council meeting properly. We are delighted that our husbands "have joined C.U.P.E. They have shown forsight in organizing and attempting to protect the welfare of their families. To enlighten the reading public and some councillors, the provisions of Bill 162, the act which created the Region of Durham, employ- ment is guaranteed only until Dcember 31, 1974. Salaries are assured up to and including December 31, 1974, of not less than they were receiving on April 1st, 1973. These guarantees only apply for one year and after December 31, 1974 no assurances are given through Bill 162 for con- tinued employment. With the cost of living rising each month and the unemployment rate high, our husbands are not expressing dissatisfaction with Council, Messrs. Kenny and McDermott, (although they have good reason to do so), but wish to guarantee, with the help of the union, their job security and con- tinued benefits they cur- rently receive. To our noted council -- How many times have you put a stop to a work order because someone came cry- _ ing on your shoulder?
