PORT PERRY, ONT. - PHONE 985-3042 (2 miles West of Manchester) Regional councillors, who have been meeting for four hours a week since their election, have decided that they should be paid $10,000 a year for their trouble. This would amount to $5 an hour if councillors worked 40 hours a week for the region. However, that is not possible since they must also work for their local council and are entitled to pay from the city or town they represent. Based on the council meetings held so far the councillors work 4 hours a week, and that makes their pay $50 an hour. Most councillors tried to suggest that this is just, "bread and butter money," but Oshawa councillor Margaret Shaw called it, "legalized robbery." Pickering's Mayor-elect George Ashe admited that the pay was, "A little on the generous side," but voted to L PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, November 7, 1973 19 Viewpoint, by Bruce Arnold accept his own generosity anyway. ROSE OPPOSED "I don't know how my congregation is going to react now that I am a rich man," Rev. Reg Rose commented to the STAR after the meeting. Rev. Rose is an Anglican minister. 'He said he would not give his minister's salary for pub- lication, but admitted it is less than $10,000. Mr. Rose was one of four council members who voted against the pay scale. Mr. Rose acknowledged that councillors from larger areas such as the City of Oshawa may have to spend more time on public bus- iness than members from smaller towns. He wondered if the councillors should not havé accepted a more token fee from the region and tried to get whatever extra they need when they set salaries Coat of Arms contest Regional councillor Reg. Rose won first battle at the October 24 region meeting in Whitby. Regional Chairman Walter Beath asked council to consider presenting a motion which would have invited all High school students in the area to submit suggestions for a regional Coat of Arms. Somegdne, "so\move," and it looked like the motion would be carried without discussion until Mr. Rose hopped to his feet. Why limit it to high schogl students, he wanted to know. Rose challenged the theory that high school students are the only ones likely to be interested enough to submit a good design, and he argued that the contest, which offered cash prizes for the best designs, should be open to everyone in the region. : He managed to persuade council and the motion was changed to read that every resident of Durham Region would be invited to submit a design and that special INVEST NOW! The Town of Durham is about 29 miles south of Owen Sound and has been incorporated under the name Durham for more than 100 years. The town has complained recently that we did not consult them before taking their name for our new region. . Residents have ex- pressed concern over possi- ble mail mix ups, and at least one Durham resident has compared our use of the name to a new business opening up with the same name and trade mark as a smaller, previously opened company. : at the local level. Rose was hesitant to suggest a reasonable salary, although he said $5,000 would probably have been enough. MALCOLM ABOUT FACE The question of salaries was the most asked during the election campaign. It was Mayor-elect Malcolm who said then that salaries should not be much more than what councillors get now (about $1,000.) At last week's regional meeting Mr. Malcolm re- win, oh opinion. Although he voted against the $10,000 he said he did so because he wanted more time to think about it. Mr. Malcolm told council he favoured about $7,000 a year but that he might be in favour of $10,000 if he was given two weeks 10° think about it.
