Cartwright landfill proposal "bunch of bunk" sa It's all a bunch of bunk!" That's the way Durham Councillor and public works committee chairman Alan Dewar sees the approval of industrial disposal site int he Blackstock area by provin- 'cial authorities. "Approving the appli cation for the dump after it . was opposed by the Central Ontario Joint Planning Board, the conservation authority, the Northumber- land-Durham County Council, Darlington and Cartwright councils and all those residents just doesn't seem logical," Dewar says. "The objections were very strong and vigorous which seems to indicate to me that all that the province has been doing and saying to enhance local authorities' power is all a bunch of bunk, and all its guff about environment protection is a "bunch of bunk as well!" An environmental hearing held by the environment ministry last July later . approved an application for an industrial garbage dump which is locate! on the boundary between Cart- wright and Darlington town- ships, despite * objections lodged by not only civic jurisdictions, but also more than 150 area residents., POLLUTION The various agencies and residents objected to the application on the grounds that the dump would have serious affects on the envi- ronment, including a possi- ble pollution of wells in the Blackstock dent's Council got busy and planned another competition between the houses. This time the sport was borden ball and the Tigers came out on top again. The first game was betwen the Tigers and the Ookpiks and the Tigers won it six to five. In the second game the Tigers beat the Ali Kats five to four. This put the tigers in first place and meant the other two houses would have to fight for second place. The Ali Kats won the battle by a score of six to three over 'the Ookpiks. On November 22nd the Grade 13 French class which consists of six students and was accompanied by Mr. Scott - and Miss Sheen, travelled to Queen's Univer- sity in Kingston to see a French play. The play by Moliere was entitled L'Avare. After the play the group spent the night at Denice Edgerton's sister's home in Kingston. At last Wednesday's reg- ional council meeting, the public works committee had' a resolution adopted unan- imously by council recom- mending that no further action in the matter be taken by the provincial authorities until such time as the council can determine the full impl- ications of the site and its need. } Under the Durham Bill, the region has clearly beeh given the responsibility by the province for land use planning, solid waste dis- posal and water supply. "If that's what the bill in- tends, then it is a matier properly handled by this council and not dealt with in isolation on the basis of an individual applicant," says Dewar. UNFORTUNATE Dewar says, according to the evidence that he has seen so far, the site chosen was an unfortunate one for the dump. "There is just not suffi- cient evidence to prove there will not be possible effect on the environment," he says. He maintains that the test that were taken by consul- ting engineers hired by the dump applicant were not taken during each season and so there are no allow- ances or evidence of what Region day care centres open toall People who live in the Scugog area but work in Oshawa, . Whitby, Ajax, Pickering or Toronto will be able to use day care centres in the Region beginning January 1. Council approve a recom- mendation in the Social Service Committee report November 28 that all day care centres in the Region be open to all persons in the Region. Committee chairman (chairperson?) Ruth Best- wick of Oshawa explained that even though the com- mittee does not recommend opening any new centres the extension of service will be helpful because of the number of people who live in the north end of the region work in the south. She said that even people who work in Toronto will benefit because they can leave their child- ren at the centre on their way to the G.O. train in Whitby and pick them up again on the way home.
