Readers ' opinion More on abortion Port Perry Star, Letter to the Editor: Dear Sir: _ I was quite surprised to see an article in the Star with the heading 'Abortions infre- quent' at Port Perry Hospi- tal (Nov. 21st, page 5). In this day and age, and part- icularly right now with the case of Dr. Morganteler so frequently in the news, why would one be surprised to read that abortions had been performed at our local hospital Well, it has more or less of a personal implication for me for the following reason. Over a year and a half now, I have been spending a day a week in Toronto doing volun- teer work, as clerk-stenog- rapher in the office of a Pro-Life (non-profit) organ- ization. Naturally, during this time, it was suggested on many occasions that I should take literature and information to my home town and spread the mes- sage of their work. I always refused (in rather a boastful manner) that I lived in a small, rural community, embracing a simple way of life wherein the subject of Abortion (per se) would not arise. So you can see, after reading your article, I more or less must "eat my words." Again, last Spring when we were in jeopardy of losing our maternity facili-* ties, I told with pride how the citizens rallied to fight this and our solidarity meant we were able to keep this ser- vice. It has been pointed out, how ironical if we had failed. A. mother-to-be, at a time when she needed 'the com- : forts of home (hospital) would have to travel to a strange one, but a woman, once being passed by abor- 'tion committee, would figur- atively speaking, simply have to walk to her local hospital. - Inyour article it says 'Most hospitals, including Com- munity Memorial, interpret Wagg Bros. Texaco this to mean mental and emotional health. As a result women can obtain abortions if they can convince the com: mittee that having a baby would be so inconvenient that it would make them unhappy and thus affect their mental health. This is rather ambiguous, to say the least. Spend a day at a psychiatric hospital. Ask the superintendent, with no name disclosure, to tell you the reason why each indivi- dual person is there. I'm sure you will find as many reasons as patients. But there will be one common denominator.some 'factor in their life is causing Unhap- piness and so Inconvenient it is giving emotional stress affecting their mental health, What a wonderful, world we would have -- what a Utopia, if every man, woman and child could have the unhappiness and incon- veniences in their life simply vacuumed (one method) or cut (curettage) as it is done by abortion. Where the woman's Physical health is involved (she may die) the reason is entirely different. In this case, it is a mater of choosing one life over another. There are tigures to prove that most abortions today are not designed to preserve the life of the mother, but are performed for social and economic rea- sons -- in other words to "save face." - It is impossible to go into the matter of abortion in a 'letter to the editor." Should anyone wish to study it in depth, they can write, tele- phone or pay a visit to the office and will receive court- eous and friendly attention.
