Blackstock Agriculture Society meeting attracts fine crowd A fine crowd attended the annual meeting held in the Community Hall on Thurs- day evening. President Ver- non Asselstine chaired the meeting and extended a warm welcome to all present especially to the several new Directors. He vaice his appreciation to all com- munity members who helped in so many ways with our Fair last year. Without doubt, it takes everyone's efforts to make Blackstock Fair possible. He is especially pleased that we maintain the agricultural aspects and not the show idea of a Fair. The financial report showed a balance of $2,214.77 which indica- ted that the 1973 was a decided success financially as well as in other ways. Reports were given by Merrill VanCamp, Horse Director; John Wolters, Cat- tle Director; Walter Wright, Concessions; Pat Sleep; Lady Director; Roy McLaughlin, Horse Shoe Competition; Elmer Hug-- gins, Rabbits; Jim Byers, 4H Clubs; Harold Swain, Field Crop Competition. It was mentioned that the Preliminary Lists for the Ladies' Classes are out and anyone who wishes to obtain, please contact Joyce Kelly, Sec'y. Harold Swain, Director of the Field Crop presented the Hall Trophy and the Black- stock Agricultural Trophy to Don Frew and Sons for the highest points in the Field Crop Competition. The Half® Trophy had been donated in memory of Mr. and Mrs: Hall, the original settlers of Cartwright by their daughter in 1934 on the centennial of Cartwright. For many years it was given to the best pota- toes but was discontinued and unused for nearly 20 years. Last year this trophy was repaired and given a new base and put into circu- lation once more as it will be given each year to the win- ner of the Field Crop Com- petition. Appointment of Merrill VanCamp and Vernon Assel- stine to the Recreational Board as our representatives were made. Lawrence McLaugh- lin introduced the guest speaker Mr. Jim Rickard of Bowmanville who spoke and showed slides on his exper- iences while in England on a Nuffield Scholarship. Jim in his interesting manner gave. a good understanding of this scholarship which is pre- sented annually to 3 Austra- lians, 3 New Zealanders and 2 Canadians in their chosen field of Agriculture, medi- cine or teaching. Sunday afternoon callers of Mrs. Ruth Wilson and Mrs. McQuade were Mr. and Mrs. Vance Wilson, Miss Joy Wilson and her finance, Toronto. Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Harris were Mrs. Louise Wright and Mrs. Al- ma Fowler. On Sunday Mr. Gordon Paisley, Craig and Cathy, Mr. and Mrs. Neil Bailey, Howard and Tara Lynn and Fred Marlow enjoyed the Ice Follies very much. Mrs. Annie Fowler, Oshawa spent Friday with Mrs. Alma Fowler. On Saturday evening Mr. and Mrs. Keith VanCamp were hosts to over twenty local residents to a dinner party celebrating the birth-- days of Roly Coy, Keith Goble, Harvey Graham and Keith VanCamp. Con- gratulatiqns, gentlemen. A fine crowd attended and enjoyed very much the lovely dance in the Rec. Centre on Saturday evening sponsored by the Scout Asso- cigtion. Music was provi- ded by George Beare and his Merrymakers. Weekend guests of Rev. and Mrs. V.M. Parsons and family were Mr. and Mrs. Claude Toms and Rhonda, Toronto. Mr. and Mrs. Neil Bailey joined Mr. and Mrs. Art Panabaker of Port Perry in the annual O'Keefe Bonspeil, Port Perry and enjoyed the day very much. Pumps ' . At the annual meeting of the Blackstock Agricultural Society last Thursday, Don Frew and Sons Co. Ltd., were awarded the Field Crop Competition trophy for 1973. Mr. Frew is seen here accepting the trophy from Harold Swain, Field Crop Director, and looking on is Vernon Asselstine, President of Blackstock Agricultural Society. The large trophy is kept for one year by Mr. Frew and the smaller trophy, in Mr. Asselstine's hands, becomes his permanent possession. ry A .
