Region to request meetings.on airport-cedarwood developments After a number of regional councillors complained at the January 16 meeting of regional council in Whitby about the Planning and De- . velopment Committee re- commendation that council, "demand" meetings with the federal and provincial go- vernments to discuss de- velopment proposals. The word was changed to 're- quest." Committee chairman, Clark Mason, said that the word demand was "deliber- ate", and intended to pro- voke immediate response from the higher levels of government. The Committee wants to talk to them about the proposed Pickering Air- port which is a federal plan, and Cedarwood City or the North Pickering community will SAVE during our wiley E 5 i AR SURF Powder (30 IN PACK coupon) \PORK 3: y Hise FEATURE! It was mentioned that the airport and Cedarwood plans are only two examples of government proposals which proceed with no involvement by regional council. Queen's Park has recently announc- ed a large expansion of one of its Provincial Park de- velopments in the region, and a string of hydro lines are expected to be strung through Durham. "A lot of evils lurk in the hearts of men at Queen's Park," com- f80r. \/ a. plained Councillor Ross of Oshawa. If the federal or provincial governments want to as- sume full responsibility for planning the region it is their right, opined Councillor Breaugh of Oshawa. But if they want the region to handle planning thén we have the right to demand that our jurisdiction be res- pected. However, Mayor Malcolm suggested that the desired result could be obtained by "requesting an immediate meeting," and that the re- gion should specify a date, "so they will know we are serious about it." Council decided to "re- quest" the meetings, but left the dates to the other govern- ments.
