Berrill Equality of the Sexes The more we read of women's lib., the more confused we become, Like -- they have a slogan "Take the woe out of woman." Yet, to do this could put them inreal jeopardy. Wo, deleted from woman would leave, man! Has anyone ever thoughtfully considered how many words of our language incorporate the words man, male and men? And would any woman want the gigantic task of erasing them from the dictionary and finding suitable equivalents? In the beginning it was Adam and Eve, not Eve and Adam. We are prone to say Mr. and Mrs., man and woman, he and she, male and female and King 'and Queen. But then, just to prove that every rule does have an exception, we're given, Ladies and Gentle- men! Of course this all adds up to humanity and mankind. Although when speaking of mankind it's supposedly understood that mankind is her-kind, too. We strongly endorse 'equal pay for equal work. Believing that women have a brain on a par with men, and, if one wishes to become a motor mehanic, scientist or a flagpole sitter, that is, or should be, her prerogative. Though we can't understand why her doing it should be heralded by a brass band and front-page headlines. If such a woman performs the feat of saving ten children from a burning building, or, of calming a crazed hijacker at some 40,000 feet up --at mid-ocean, she has earned those headlines and favorable comments. But not because of her sex. It wasn't something deliberately chosen, as no doubt she herself was the most surprised person of all -- learning her own capabilities. ~ The fact that man and woman are different (and ever will be) doesn't mean that one is lesser in value or importance. The Supreme Being is always referred to as 'He' nor, have we noted anyone clamoring to change this. But also of the masculine is Satan, Demon, Devil and Imp. While the feminists accept happily, Lady Luck and Dame Fortune. Then comes the criticism regarding the general education of our children. Some claim there's coercion -- with dolls etc. we're pushing our little girls into that ultimate role. And there's male domination in their story-books and T.V. shows. There's even a suggestion to ban those nursery rhymes that have been an integral part of children's lives throughout the years. They ask, "Why couldn't it be, Little Girl Blue?" And that poor Old Woman in the Shoe! "Why? Why did she have to have all those children?" We suspect that some kids are instructed to build a Snow Woman, sing Frosty the Snowgirl, relate to Mother Christmas and always to put an M's when addressing their note to Santa Claus. Just in case. It has long ago been proven that the weaker sex is the stronger sex; her pain-indurance is greater; her life-span is longer. Also, until recently a rich woman was not compelled to support her husband though he might be penniless and ill. While, in a marriage break-up even a bad mother can usually get the custody of their children, and the man must pay. The scale of justice has always wavered in her favour. So why the beef? - We could perchance have listened to the wrong drummer. But is it not just a matter of personal outlook? One little girl put it this way. In her essay on the origin of man, she wrote, "All people sprang from monkeys, but the women sprang further than the men." Yet, we feel that, were the subject analized sanely 'twould be found that things are pretty well evened up. But here, we recall still another version of equality. At a faraway time we enrolled in a course of study that culminated in written exams judged by top officials of the church. Much to our surprise, and pleasure, we were informed that ours was the highest mark attained in the rather large class. Later however, came disappointment. When the results were published in the widely circulated, church quarterly, we found our name -- the very last one on the list. It was then, a dear wise lady reminded us that "The Good Book says 'The first shall be last and the last shall be first." . : NOW ISTHE TIME TO ORDER YOUR "WINTER FUEL SAVE Money on DX Premium Quality Fuel Oil Call Collect 668-3381 DX FUEL OIL Call us today for PROMPT, COURTEOUS SERVICE _ 4
