Editor By Steve Grieveson Last August; along with four other cadets from across Canada, 1 had the honour to represent Canada exchange in an program Steve, Wednesday, Feb. 6th, 1974 with Sweden. Our group of 5 cadets and one accompanying officer spent a total of 10 days in Sweden. We also saw various "parts of Britain due to our travelling from Gatwick Air- port to Heathrow Airport and vice-a-versa. Before we even departed from Canada we had to gather in Ottawa which gave us a chance to tour the capital as well. I would like to stress that we did not see Sweden as lourists as most exchanges are set up, but rather almost Steve Grieveson in front of the unique church in Oxelsund. More than 1,000 athletes and officials from Arctic Quebec, Northwest Territories, Yukon and Alaska will be taking part in the 1974 Arctic Winter Games in Anchorage, Alaska, March 4 to 10. V-Belts and Pulleys Bearings Chain and, Sprockets as the Swedes themselves see it. Out of the two weeks that we were in Sweden, we acted as tourists for only 414 days. The remainder of our stay was spent either on board Swedish Naval Ships or at the Swedish cadet "summer training camp in Dalaro. Dalaro Skans, the island training camp for Swedish sea cadets, is restored tower barracks fromt he 16th cen- tury. It is situated just outside of Stockholm on the Swedish coast. Here we spent a total of 3!» days and followed the camp routine even so far as our morning swim in the Baltic Sea. A morning swim doesn't seem to unusual except for the fact that we were told that we shouldn't wear our bathing suits into swim as they would get wet. Therefore, it was suggested that we do as the Swedes, and goin . . . .? It wouldn't have been so bad, had there not been an audience consisting of laundry girls and cooks on the cliff behind us. The Swedes challenged us to many races such as sailing, pulling, whaling. In sailing, 'I managed to take 3rd place from 15 entrants, but only because of luck and not knowledge of their winds between the islands. Along the coast, owning a sailboat of 18 ft. or better is as common as owning a car here in Canada. Most of the Swedes I saw were excellent sailors. I might add at this time that Sweden has one of the most powerful and modern navies in the world. But this is necessary if you consider her giant neighbour :Russia. Sailing is not the only field that the Swedes are out- standing in. They all seem to be in very good to excellent physical condition. There are a considerable number of bicycles, few of which are ten speed, the type gaining popularity here in Canada. Despite the extremely high price of gasoline and diesel fuel in Sweden the inhabi- tants still drive cars. The most popular cars of courses are VW's and Volvos. The: latter of which is manu- factured in Sweden. Even though this is true the Swedes pay approx. $1,000. or more for the same car imported here to Canada. The cost of living is much higher despite the fact that Swedes have approximately the same average salary as we in Canada. But somehow the Government has made wages more equal thus almost eliminating the extremes of the scale of poverty and wealth. Luxu- ries such as cigarettes, alco- hol and candies are highly taxed. To give you an example, the price of the cheapest quality cigarettes is $1.25 pkg. Alcohol is anywhere from 40 per cent to 160 per cent more expensive as the same quality of alcohol here. Imported goods face high tariffs which causes higher prices. Now back to the trip itself. We spent 3 full days on a Swedish SKV (which is a medium sized harbour craft) touring the coast and its thousands of islands with small as well as large city ports. We toured the city of 3 Oxelosund which is where" the world famous swedish steel is made. The steel mill itself is considerably larger than G.M. in Oshawa. We also toured Visby a 13th century town on Gotland Island which is just 75 - 80 miles off the S.E. coast of Sweden. This town, Visby, i is beautifully different in that the whole town is a historical » site. Every building in Visby is just as it was in the 13th century, although the inter- ior is as modern as any new building today unless the inhabitants want it other- wise, The population of Visby is approximately 5,000. Com- pare that to the* popula- tion of Port Perry. Vishy is still surrounded by a huge stone wall which in days of vore, protected the towns- people from the farmers of the remainder of Gotland Is. The town is covered in church ruins all of which are Lutheran background. "There is a ferry which travels to the mainland twice daily. This ferry is capable@ of carrying 350 cars per trip, 6 (continued on page 23) ud A
