Canada is the first country to host the World Contest three times, 1953, 1963 and now 1975. The Regional Municipality of Durham, just east of Toronto, is the official host municipality with the site spanning the Oshawa- Whitby border. The plowing competition itself will be held in north Oshawa, the first time the event has ever been held ina city. Part of the mammoth tent city, which will be crammed full of machinery and other displays, will be set up on the Whitby side of he border. The International Plowing Match, held annually in Ontario, and the Canadian Plowing Match, will be held in conjunction with the world match. The top plowmen from each province will compete in the national event with the top two Canadians repre- senting Canada in the World Match. 200,000 EXPECTED TO ATTEND The week long activities. start Tuesday, September' 23, next year and will run to Sunday, September 28. About 200,000 people are expected to attend, the majority of these from urban areas. A total of 800 acres on the Robson and Ransom farms will be used for the event -- half of it for the plowing competitions. The tent city will cover about 100 acres. As well as what will be one of the largest farm machin- ery exhibits of its kind in the world, a wide variety of agricultural and consumer items will be on display. The local committee and the Ontario Plowmen's Association hope to show urban-oriented residents just what farming is all about and why the cost of food is rising. L_Bob Timbers 47, of Ux- bridge, is a four time Canadian plowing champion and has represented Canada -in four world plowing comp- etitions. The site is directly east of Brooklin, between Thickson Road and Simcoe Street, in what was the Township of East Whitby until it was amalgamated with the City of Oshawa January 1, 1974, with the advent of the Regio- nal Municipality of Durham. There are siX exits from Hwy. 401 which will lead to the site, or spectators can use Hwy. 7, Hwy. 12, or Hwy. 2. "ROLL CARPET" Regional Chairman Walter Beath, and Oshawa and - Whitby mayors Jim Potti- . cary and Desmond Newman, have promised to roll out the red carpet for this world event -- the first such inter- national project under- taken in the new region. Mr. Beath pledged full support front the Regional Munici- pality of Durham for the project at the 1974 annual meeting of the Ontario Plowmen's Association. Spectators will 'see in action the people who are feeding the world," said Mayor Potticary. Mayor Newman, an active supporter since planning got under way four years ago for the event, is a firm believer in the importance of Can- ada's rural heritage. "People should come out to see just what a great heritage it is," said the Whitby mayor. This will be the third time this area of Ontario has hosted the International Plowing match but the first time it has hosted the world event. [Residential - Commercial - ouUT THE RED And Heating) SERVICE CALLS - THIRD TIME IN CANADA The first world plowing match was held in Canada -- in Cobourg, Ontario, in 1953 and Mr. Timbers was among the competitors. The only other time Canada has hosted the world event was 11 years ago at Caledon, Ontario. Opening day, September 23, is a Tuesday and events will continue until the Sunday. The plowing will be completed on Saturday but the Tented City and general areal will remain open on the Sunday to aécommodate the people who will not be able to attend during the week. A Cairn of Peace will be erected at the site -- as at every World Plowing Match, with each country bringing a stone to be set into the cairn. 1,500 AT BANQUET The awards banquet, which draws about 1,500, will be one of the highlights of the week. The Ontario Plowmen's Association is working activ- ly with the local committee td prepare for the major event. The International Plowing - Match this year is being held near Georgetown in Halton County, September 24 to 28, while the world match is being held in Helsinki, Fin- land.
